RE: 2016-17 bowl projections
Hope we are not going to Mobile. Would like that game on the 19th in Miami. Would go to that one. The game in Mobile is too close to Christmas and don't like the idea of traveling on Christmas Eve to get home. Too many things going on to make that work out. Not sure how the weather would be either. Wasn't that great back in 2005.

And although Troy has had some nice teams, not exactly the name recognition I would be looking for in a bowl game. Not sure if the same issue exists for Toledo outside of the Midwest - but we have been highly ranked 40 years ago and again in more recent years. But I still think we are not that well known in the South and West regions.

I chatted with Jason Candle last night at the MBB game. He said we would know today where we are going. Mobile, Montgomery, and Miami were mentioned.

Hmmm...the fact that he would even mention Montgomery has me a bit concerned, particularly when combined with the strong opinion from App State that we're playing them in that bowl. Nothing against the opponent; but of those 3 possibilities he listed, Montgomery is the one that would seem to have the least appeal to Rocket fans for traveling.

If we do get sent to the Camellia Bowl, I can't wait to hear where CMU gets to go...

emu vs old dominion in bahamas
wmu vs an at large (wisconsin, colorado, ok st, auburn) at the cotton bowl in arlington, TX
miami vs miss st in st petes - another mac vs p5 matchup
cmu vs sun belt at camellia bowl in alabama
toledo/ohio vs tulsa/aac in miami beach
toledo/ohio vs troy/app st in mobile

Bowl games between non-P5 conf teams are a no-win, IMO. This bowl game thing is a mess. If they can't even in the Bowl games mandate that mid-major conferences get a shot to show their worth against even a middle of the pack P5, then there's no point in the mid-major even showing up. There's no opportunity to improve reputation. There's no-motivation for the players to give up their holidays. And in many cases, there's not even a nice vacation spot. Welcoming places, don't get me wrong but how many are going to hang around any longer than the game?

For the Northern based, moderately incomed fan, it's too far and too expensive for a two day stay.

RE: 2016-17 bowl projections
Ok--so if the Camellia Bowl is an ESPN bowl, then I feel a bit more confident that we AREN'T going there, since the last "prediction" from ESPN has Arkansas State going there, not App State, and I just can't imagine anyone being in favor of yet another UT/StAte game. One could reasonably assume ESPN has some say in who plays in THEIR bowls. I'm thinking we're back to Miami Beach or Mobile. Miami Beach would be great for recruiting purposes, no?

I could care less if we play a mediocre Sun Belt team. To me that's not a reward for a good season. I'm just thankful for the extra practices that our underclassmen need.

RE: 2016-17 bowl projections
So let me get this straight, Toledo is playing:

App St in Montgomery
or
Troy in Mobile
or
USF in Orlando
or
Tulsa, USF, UCF in Miami

Glad that has been cleared up 03-wink

Seriously though, All Bowls have their pros and cons, I am just happy the Rockets are going bowling. 95% of Bowl games are either P5 vs P5 or G5 vs G5, so no point in complaining. Besides other G5s probably thing similarly of Toledo as some on this board think of other G5s. I like Toledo's potential bowls, and it seems like all will provide a quality opponent.

Montgomery, easy to travel to, game on a Saturday, minimal vacation time needed, afforable. App St would be a good opponent.

Mobile, great bowl experience, Troy would be a good matchup, not terrible to get to and not too expensive, Game on Friday, which also means minimal vaca time needed, proximity to X-Mas could be seen as negative.

Miami, great destination, a little more expensive trip. Game on Monday, once again minimal vaca time. AAC opponent would be cool.

Won;t even comment on the Cure Bowl, I think Jerry Palm is off his rocker on that one.

RE: 2016-17 bowl projections
Monitoring things over on the Sun Belt boards...interesting thoughts. The StAte fans are now convinced they're headed to Orlando for the Cure Bowl against UCF--and they're not terribly happy about it. The "word" they are working with is that Mobile chose Ohio, and since Toledo would then go to Montgomery, there couldn't be another UT/StAte matchup, so StAte had to swap bowls with App State, who was "originally" going to Orlando. I see a big problem with that theory, though, which is our Sun Belt friends are forgetting that the MAC has a bowl to fill in Miami Beach against an AAC team, and it would scream incompetence if the MAC sent CMU to that bowl.

Now, what could be accurate is that StATe had to switch bowls, from being looked at for Mobile to a different bowl, because perhaps Toledo is headed to Mobile, and the aforementioned 4th game in 4 years between UT and StAte needed to be avoided.

It is kinda fun speculating though!

RE: 2016-17 bowl projections
How much will it cost the university to participate in the bowl? Nothing against Montgomery nor App. St. As much as the b-ball announcer tried to pimp this as something "all college football will be watching," I'll be surprised if even the casual UT fan will be watching. I don't know the feeling at APP St but since they are recent to DI, it may matter to them.

If it costs our program even a penny, I'd cheer if the AD said "thanks but no thanks" and bucked the trend of being pushed around by tv. No sports program is worth that to me. Even if it doesn't "cost," The plus side of this meaningless game, the players get home in plenty of time for Christmas.
