Dang. Rockets just need to quit whining, pull up your big boy pants, come to Montgomery and play some football. You won't be sorry with the venue and carpet that they roll out down there.

Wtf

That big, bad SEC opponent is 5-7. They shouldn't even be in a bowl.

At least we're playing a conference champion...

Good, let's play them in Miami. We'll rent a high school stadium or use one of the local colleges'.

Reality is, we'd (or APP St ) get more press points playing that lower level SEC team and losing a close game then we will if either of us beats the tar out the other.

Is this a "win" for the players? I suppose that's all that matters, as long as it doesn't cost the university an arm and a leg. Or does it just keep them from going home early?

Wah!! Maybe Toledo should win their big conference games, and they could go to a better bowl game. You get what you deserved sometimes. App St is a respectable opponent. People around here act like we win the MAC every year.

In a different season, I imagine Montgomery a nice place to visit. Certainly full of history.

"Good match-up?" I don't actually expect our players to be "up" for the game. Do they get a vote?

Why in the world would any university participate in this if they do not come out WELL ahead economically? No recruit is going to choose your school because of participation in this bowl. The extra practice hadn't helped us win a conference championship or our depth....

Really........You don't think that is being a little dramatic. There are barely any teams that come out ahead from bowl game. Even the Power 5 schools lose money.

At least we're not playing a 5-7 North Texas team...could you imagine being the team that has to play them (Army in the Heart of Dallas bowl). My goodness, bowl season has become a joke nowadays.

The only things most bowls do anymore is make money for the people who is on the committees. They are a scam.

And if The Navy had been able to pass WMU in the CFP rankings this weekend, it would have been 13-0 WMU vs 5-7 NTSU in the Dallas Bowl, and I absolutely think it would have happened if The Navy hadn't laid an egg yesterday, and Fleck would be gone TODAY to have avoided the worst game in the history of college football bowl season. That would have been hysterical!

From the UT site (maybe we should start a Camellia Bowl thread, but I'll let someone smarter than I am make that call. Might be too soon to do it now) -

http://www.utrockets.com/news/2016/12/4/...h=football

From the MAC site (a rundown of all the bowls for conference schools)

You think this bowl game makes or breaks UT's recruiting? If that were true, how did WMU ever get to the Cotton Bowl? That has more to do with a coach and his staff. Great coaches and staff can recruit. What bowl game you go to, doesn't matter.

Dang, the APP st sports promoter already started a second ID after getting called out on the first one.

Read slowly, the discussion is not a slam on the city or the opponent. Wouldn't you rather have a P5 opponent against, which to prove your team's worth? Haven't they earned that opportunity? If this was b-ball, you'd have your wish. Heck, they'd put you against Duke, stay in the neighborhood. AND you'd make money. Lots of it.

You're setting your school up to lose money against the third place MAC team, while ESPN makes a bundle. What do they teach in your business school?

Here's apparently news for you, don't take it too harshly. No matter how many games you win against other non P5 teams, you're not going to be invited to the economic party. If those conferences get to use the non P5s in order to make a bundle, then they need the non P5s to make a bundle. Make them pay up with a bowl game.

In MY opinion, it should be mandatory. If they're going to have this many bowl games to make money for ESPN and the power 5, then they should be mandated that every Conf Champ gets to play a P5. That would be you, not us.

Not sure who in this long series of posts you're talking to but you posted it towards mine in a way that appears oppositional, but we agree. That's exactly what I posted, a bowl like this does nothing to help recruiting.

I thoroughly enjoyed Boca Raton last year so I was sort of hoping for Miami, but the last two times I visited Alabama I stopped in Huntsville and Birmingham on the way to Mobile so I was due a stop in Montgomery anyway. I've been wanting a home-and-home with App. St so maybe our AD's will put something together. This should be a good game. Good luck!

the payouts change yearly. Generally, the team costs will be covered and if the game makes money there's some additional payout. App St more likely to come out positive as they will likely sell a lot more tickets

RE: 2016-17 bowl projections
none, but the Miami game vs Miss St is at 11 in the morning the day after Christmas which would have been a disaster for fan support and a strain on the families of all the staff and athletic dept and support folks for the team. can't call it for the miami beach matchup, it is at 230 on a monday so kinda low profile, and tulsa comes to town next september already. technically, the camellia picks a mac team before the miami beach folks. ESPN prob likes the Toledo-Appy St matchup for competitiveness and entertainment value for the first part of its Saturday night prime time flagship opening bowl week blitz.
