nice RPI boost should ODU win
Indeed, and not a bad loss should that happen. With that field, only a loss to St. John's would be considered bad, and any win would be very helpful.

We've got bigger problems to fix in this conference (my team included, hey there Houston Baptist!!) than losses to St. John's!

Per Andy Katz, we're playing SDSU in game 1 of the Diamondhead Classic. Game 2 will be Tulsa/SFA.

Look over the fact that we open the conference with 3 straight road games.
You realize that's a gift right? The first 3 games of the conference season are Jan 1st, Jan 5th, and Jan 7th. This time of the year would normally depress ticket sales, and is accentuated by the fact that early conference games will have to compete with a bunch of bowls in that timeframe.
UAB is lucky they don't have home games then because it means that their average home attendance goes up, and they get to play away games when the "home crowd" effect will be essentially neutralized.
EDIT: So, I thought that UAB would generally adhere to the same dates as the ODU schedule. I've updated the above dates, but UAB should *also* be glad they don't have to play games on Dec 31st and Jan 2nd, which are home games for ODU.

Yep, Charlotte and ODU were dealt a bad hand. We get UNT and Rice on Dec. 31st and Jan. 2nd, make 2 trips to Texas, and no return trip from MT and UAB.
I would be more upset at the schedule if we were killing it but right now we just need to win the games in front us no matter who the opponent is or where we play them.

No bad teams, but there's a pretty clear gap between Villanova and the pack. Here's hoping you're on the opposite site of the bracket from them because you could get to the final against them.

I'm hoping for an appearance in the 7th place game myself. And apparently we're on the same side as Villanova.

Rice is also scheduled to play UT Arlington as part of its non-conference slate. Exact details of the game are pending.

Milligan?! Ugh, I'm tired of having NAIA games. Can't we schedule a crappy D-1 school instead? :( at least it looks pretty good otherwise. Only concern would be not a very good SOS. All are winnable games tho.

Western fans are the same way but it's a catch22
First off the difference in money paid for that home game for a D2/NAIA vs a awful D1 program that is willing to play for pay is almost triple the cost. At Western it's around 15-20k vs 40-50k . In a 28 million dollar budget that's not a lot of money. But if that money is used somewhere else, like recruiting, it has a higher chance of being better spent. But every dollar is important today.
The pay for play is suppose to be a easy win no matter who you schedule. Some harder than others but still should be a win 99% of the time. So is there really a difference between a decent D2/NAIA vs a 300 rpi D1 team? Sure there's a difference but our fans are looking at that crappy team as D2 anyways...in their minds.
So not only is the cost more as you said it's a huge SOS hit and could be the difference of 15-20 spots in the RPI. Not only that it adds another team to the list of 200+ RPI schools you play. Other than the win (.6 of a win to your RPI) it hurts you more than helps.
For the most part you will not see a increase in fans at a game vs 300+ RPI pay for play as you will the D2 school. So really you are getting more bang for the buck and your RPI from the D2/NAIA school.
It would be great if we all could sign enough home and home so we don't need to play a awful school ...knowing they will most likely be 250-300 RPI going in. But most if not all of us needs that buy game (or two) to increase money made off season tickets.

Thank you for that. I needed a little reason. I was starting to see stars at the idea of another stupid NAIA game where we draw 2,000 fans at best and no one really cares. I think what bites more than anything is that this is supposed to be our home opener. I really don't want to have it flop and fail after our NCAA success last year. I just have this bad image of all these thousands of people getting excited and then thinking "WTF, Milligan?! I don't want to see that!" Hope it all works out, and if we win - like we should - that counts as well...
