RE: New Chair
This a great discussion and to every alum, no matter what discipline you studied, there is a role for you to play in supporting existing programs and expanding opportunities.
1. Join the Alumni Association. It helps the department/major and expands opportunities. It is also a metric used to determine our ranking.

I've been the president of our chapter for the past three years. We recognize alumni of achievement and we raise funds for scholarships. We also work with Deans and faculty to provide feed back for community involvement and program viability.

2. Give to the academic fund. In addition to the dollars helping with budget gaps (TN sucks at supporting education) the number of alumni giving is a metric used for ranking.

3. Get your company/organization involved in supporting the individual and programs. Set up match giving. Host interns. Support research in areas impacting your work.

This school year I sponsored a Memphis College Signing Day for Shelby County Schools. All over the system our schools k-12 wore college logo shirts to make a statement that the broad definition of going to college is essential to transforming the economic and social fabric of our city. Many companies also supported us by making it a college dress day. Our tweeter account had over 1.5 millions impressions in two days. Scholarship offers have reached nearly $400,000,000. In 4 years we have increased post-secondary enrollment from 46% to 59% of the senior class plus more choosing the apprenticeship option. We expect all of those numbers to increase for the 2016 class.

We lead the country in FAFSA completion rates with 88% of all seniors completing. That's up from 45% just 4 years ago.

We've cut Truancy and chronic Absenteeism significantly. We dramatically cut out-of-school suspension and expulsions even though violence is epidemic in the community. We can't change lives if we don't have our children in school.

I want to elevate the college decision for the average kid to the pomp that college athletes get on national signing day. Memphis has one of the highest rates of children living in poverty. That's a fact that is unacceptable and it's one we can change.

Education is the key to changing most of the social ills we face. Yes I have a bible in my desk drawer at work and a cross in my pencil holder. But education is the tool needed to empower our children.

Be a mentor. Support a youth program. Give time, money resources somewhere. Volunteer. Be part of the accountability.

Tell positive stories. There lots of good going on and we can choose a bright future.

Isn't an architecture degree one of the least degrees in demand right now. Perhaps a MS might help but architects are almost a dime a dozen. I know these trends change over time but...

I know I'm wishing for the moon but I sure wish we had a med school. Heck I'd even take a vet school.

Im not sure why, but vet schools are rare, there are fewer than 50 in the US, some states don't have one, only a few states have multiples.

Probably "Pie in the Sky" thinking, but I think a School of Medicine (perhaps Osteopathic Medicine). The research dollars that could be raised, and the work done would go a very long way for the improvement of the Academic Standing of the University. It would be very hard, if not impossible, to compete with UTCHS, but a school for Osteopathic Medicine might not be so far out of reach.

Entrepreneurship. Maybe we already have it. But, I notice more colleges are starting to offer this. A friend just got a degree in this from BAYLOR. Medicine would be my #2 choice.

A vet school would be great I think. The nearest ones I know of are UTK, LSU, and Oklahoma State.

Great idea. Also perhaps Information Security. These are specific areas of focus that would map directly to needs in the marketplace that also command top salaries.

Are you distinguishing info sec from cybersec, which has a reputable program at the b- school?

Oh, and the director of the program said he's in talks with practically all area private schools as well.

Oh, and the director of the program said he's in talks with practically all area private schools as well.

Just an FYI for those Memphis-area parents of high school students.

By participating in the DE program, you can save some serious $$$.

Currently a 3-hr class at the UofM is $1,201.00.

A 4-hr class is $1,602.00.

The Board of Regents discounts those prices for Dual Enrollment to the following:
3-hour class: $498.00 (savings of $703.00)
4-hour class: $664.00 (savings of $938.00)

For example purposes... let's say your high school student begins DE as a Junior (the earliest start allowed) and takes a total of 8 3-hour classes during his junior and senior years.

$1,201.00 cost per class x 8 classes = $9,608 cost
$498.00 discounted cost per class x 8 classes = $3,984 discounted cost
$703.00 savings per class x 8 classes = $5,624 savings

That's a pretty substantial savings. But there's more.

There are grants available from TSAC and the UofM as well as HOPE funds. They play out as follows (again for 3-hr classes):
  • Class 1 $498 - $498 TSAC grant = cost of $0 (savings $1,201)
  • Class 2 $498 - $498 TSAC grant = cost of $0 (savings $1,201, cumulative savings $2,402)
  • Class 3 $498 - $200 TSAC grant - $200 UofM grant = cost of $98 (savings $1,103, cumulative savings $3,505)
  • Class 4 $498 - $200 UofM grant = cost of $298 (savings $903, cumulative savings $4,408)
  • Class 5 $498 - $300 HOPE funds = cost of $198 (savings $1,003, cumulative savings $5,411)
  • Class 6 $498 - $300 HOPE funds = cost of $198 (savings $1,003, cumulative savings $6,414)
  • Class 7 $498 - $300 HOPE funds = cost of $198 (savings $1,003, cumulative savings $7,417)
  • Class 8 $498 - $300 HOPE funds = cost of $198 (savings $1,003, cumulative savings $8,420)

For 8 3hr classes you pay a discounted rate with grants of $1,188 compared to a non-discounted rate of $9,608.

That's better than "buy 1 get 7 free."

And the savings is even more if you toss in some 4-hour classes.

Sorry.... one more post about Dual Enrollment.

In the Fall your child takes a semester of English Comp 1. That counts as a full semester college and a full YEAR of high school.

Then your child takes a semester of English Comp 2 in the Spring. That also counts as a full semester of college and a full YEAR of high school.

In the course of your child's high school junior year he knocks out two years of high school English AND he knocked out his freshman year of college English.

The same thing for foreign language, US History, Algebra, Elementary Calculus, Statistics, Oral Communication, etc.

Your child could conceivably walk on to the college campus with his entire freshman year completed.

All TN board of regents schools accept DE credit. Most but not all private schools accept it. Vanderbilt does NOT accept DE. They don't accept AP, etc either.

To be accepted as a UofM Dual Enrollment student you must have:

2. 100 admissions index score (high school GPA x 30) + ACT composite score

To take English Comp you must have a minimum 18 ACT English sub-score.
To take math you must have a minimum 19 ACT Math sub-score.

I would want to build the best computer science/information technology school in the South. FedEx, AutoZone and many other companies would greatly benefit from that. And new businesses might move to Memphis if it had that talent pool.

You wouldn't believe how many people I work with from other countries. Seriously, the cafeteria is like walking through the United Nations.

I long for the days when we had the best engineers in the world, like those who built NASA.
