Why Old Dominion might be the 11th school.....
Nothing new here overall but halfway through the article it points out why ODU is a very strong and likely candidate.

RE: Why Old Dominion might be the 11th school.....
I could be wrong, but my guess is there will be no 11th school. I suspect, we only add a 12th school. If we are down to ten, we likely remain at 10. ODU has a solid argument to be that 12th school. Just curious, how big is the ODU waiting list for season tickets? Just curious what their near term potential is.

I see is average attendance, lack of history, and the new state athletic subsidy limits as ODU's weakest spots. The only stadium proposal I saw only increased the size to 25K---which would be the smallest in the AAC. Needs to be at least 30K I would think. Several AAC schools have stadiums in that general size range. Budget size and location are the two biggest pluses for ODU.

I'll probably be called insane and to put the bong down lol but I prefer Marshall over ODU as a candidate.

I think UMass is more likely than Marshall. Academics seem to be a big issue with this group of presidents (another reason ODU might have problems). Besides, Marshall wont be the same team without NQ's.

You need to get the stadium situation worked out first. Do that and you'll be in the top 2-3 candidates.

I believe season ticket sales have leveled out at 15,000 (in our current 20,000 seat stadium) and there is no longer a significant waiting list. The new stadium however, will probably drive up the number of season ticket holders as well as overall attendance.

I agree history and quality of the football program work against us. Geography along with the items already noted work in our favor.

ODU would certainly be a risk, but there there is a great potential upside. No arquement here that S. Miss and/or Marshall would be "less risky" and much better established programs.

Funny that we got a mention as just a market after going to a bowl and with a $300m stadium project on the table...

I love the Norfolk market and footprint location. I thought ODU was planning a nice waterfront stadium but it got scrubbed. Is it back on?

If the AAC loses UC and Memphis, I think the conference would be better served doubling down on the Houston market and add Rice, then add Army as a football only member. With Army, Navy, Rice, Tulane, SMU, Tulsa and UConn, the conference would have a top tier collection of academic institutions in large markets.

Put Rice in the West, Army in the East. The Army/Navy game will always be a non-conference game unless each school wins their division. Then the game could double as the AAC Championship.

odu has a tiny stadium and zero football brand and barely any basketball

sure you guys are spending like us and have a local following but i very much doubt odu is anywhere near our top candidate
too much of a project

I see a ton of potential in ODU, if it were just about making the league stronger and thought the AAC needed to do this to be in the P6 I could make a strong argument. However, as an ECU fan elevating you to the AAC would only be a detriment. ECU has a huge advantage on ODU right now with cost of attendance, exposure, etc. Why on earth would we want to level the playing field? Same goes for Charlotte, App St, JMU, or Coastal Carolina.

Unfortunately, this is why we're not in the ACC.

AAC probably won't add until looted.

Despite its favorable market, ODU is off the table due to not being an academically ranked national university.

If the criteria are: 1. Academic ranking; 2. State flagship or large media market; and, not least, interest in joining (which, by implication, especially if the conference is looted, means no MWC or BYU), then the options are limited:

UMass
Charlotte
Ga. State
UAB
Rice
Buffalo
Army (special case)
N. Illinois (???)

We really just need to invite WVU back. It's really going to be us or the Big 12 to survive and if we are proactive and band together the B12 will be done quickly.

Texas/Oklahoma/Texas Tech/Oklahoma State to PAC with LHN being folded into the PAC 12 Networks with ESPN getting a stake in that.

Kansas+Full time Notre Dame to ACC

Kansas State/Iowa State to B1G

Then we pick up Baylor and TCU + FB-only Army.
