They will be in the BIG12, want to replace Colorado with them. Dosent hurt that they beat Colorado on a regular basis

RE: Colorado State's Big 12 Pitch
Interesting. Colorado State makes a big mention of their biggest weakness - location/distance. Why accentuate such a negative?

In our 44 page media thingy presumably intended for Big XII consumption earlier this month, we made no mention of distance/location to current members. Because it's obvious - of any serious candidate, we are the closest to the current members (including WVU, otherwise it would be any of the Texas candidates). We rightly decided to focus on academics/facilities/history/future developments.

Because they were showing that the distance isnt that big of a deal, which it really isnt. Not much difference in flying from Texas to Kansas and flying from Texas to Colorado. Now for fans that might want to drive, it'd be easier to drive to Memphis than Ft Collins.

yea, but a good chunk of non-revenue sports don't fly.

I am sure they do sometimes and it would just be one trip every other year for the teams going there. I would think P5 teams with all that money have no issue with flying when the it's more than a 4-6 hour bus ride.

They really do not. And it would create a second distinct island. Go look at all of the sports offered by Big 12 schools. The gymnastics team, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf, etc. are not flying to Colorado and WVU every year.

CSU is a lot closer to the majority of the Big 12 than WVU is. East/West divisions don't look to bad with CSU joining the Texas schools and on of the Oklahoma or Kansas schools and Cincy joining in the east with WVU, Iowa St and 3 of the 4 Oklahoma/Kansas schools.

I've never thought CSU was much of a threat but they do have some big positives- academic profile, large market with large Big 12 alumni base, decent geography, and a athletic history that's not much worse than ours.

Actually, over the last 30 years we have a slightly better winning % against the Rebels than CSU has over the Buffs.

CU leads over CSU 18-7
OM leads Memphis 15-6

Just for perspective and comparison.
WVU CSU Mem
Texas 1,400 975 650
Tech 1,465 600 750
TCU 1,250 825 485
Baylor 1,300 925 550
Kansas 900 625 480
K State 975 550 575
Iowa St. 875 675 650
Oklahoma 1,135 725 500
OSU 1,085 700 475
West Vir. NA 1,500 750

That averages out to 1,154 miles per road trip for WVU, 810 for CSU, and 585 for Memphis. While CSU is closer than WVU, it is still very much on an island by itself in respect to the rest of the Big 12.

I love those Memphis averages. Very doable drives for the most part. WVU and Tech would be brutal. UT and ISU are about 10+ hours. The rest are not bad at all.

Another interesting way to look at is the range.

West Virginia - 875 to 1,465 average 1,154
Colorado State - 550 to 1,500 average 810
Memphis - 475 to 750, average 585

West Virginia really is all alone out there and need some partners. Adding Colorado State just does not make sense geographically and I do not see how they are strong enough collectively in all other categories to be more attractive than Memphis, Houston, UCONN or the Florida schools.
