ACC fans may be able to add something to this but I believe that part of the current ACC deal with ESPN consists of a 45 million dollar payment to the ACC by ESPN if a conference network isn’t in the works by I believe it’s this July.

If it does this may be the next area of conference expansion with ESPN pushing the ACC to go to 16 full members as part of the deal to create the maximum amount of content.

Yep and I expect them to work out a deal with the big 12 to get West Virginia. Big 12 made a mistake taking a team so far out of their footprint. They'd take the buy out $ to rid WV to the ACC. A 16 team ACC (with WV & UCONN) gives them a true North/South set up. The South would be a lot stronger than the North but FSU and Clemson would be happy as would the NC schools. My prediction.
Cheers!

WV to the ACC will NEVER happen

I thought the same about Louisville to the ACC.....

That was a you problem then...as even before UL moved into the YUM Center, they were still #1 in Basketball Revenue...and the old guard in ACC has always been favored toward Basketball.

UL to ACC was a no brainer...especially after Big 12 hesitated.

Why give AAC another 50 to 60 mil per year, when they can give ACC 20 to give .... lets say Cincy and Uconn 10 mil per year each for the remainder of ACC contract.
Then they can actually negotiate AAC deal down. They gain 24 more ACC games, and in the end it cost them 18mil or less per year.

So, let me flip the question on you---why give the AAC 40 million extra (20 million per new team) just to get Cinci and UConn---when you can get all 12 AAC teams for almost the same amount (60 million would give the AAC about 6 million per team)? The biggest issue for the AAC is the Big12. If the Big12 ales the top 2 (possibly 4) schools, I don't see much of a raise (if any) coming,

Because after you pay the extra 40 mil, AAC is weakened and you don't have to give them anymore than now. 20 mil in the bank. saved when $$$ is a serious problem. Add to that the fact, Cincy and UCONN will be worth more to ESPN in the ACC.

Another plus with UCONN gone they actually can renegotiate the current AAC deal down.

The AAC won't be negotiated down as the performance metric has been set. That being said the big 10 needs the distribution network. The time zone difference and lack of tv partner is why the PAC is failing.

You still paid 60 million---because the assumption you can get the AAC for less is probably erroneous. CBS Sports, NBC-Sports, and possibly Fox might be interested. The low ball technique failed pretty miserably for ESPN when they tried it with the Big10.

Granted, the AAC and Big10 are completely different properties---but they also had completely different starting places I the last contract cycle. The Big10 was an established stable top tier property when its last contract was written. The AAC was a new, unstable media property with no track record. The AAC has performed well above expectations---fairly close to the old Big East in fact. It was paid well below the old Big East in the last contract. My guess is it will require more money this time around to land the AAC content now that it has proven its ability to attract a significant audience.

I find it funny that everyone was worried about ESPN needing to cut $100 million.... if they dont get any part of the Big 10, then that saves them $100 million alone, plus all the other cost cutting. Then they will be short on content.

If the AAC does only lose 1 team (as I suspect) then we must go hard at the MWC. Make it so that there really is only 1 conference to bid on in 2019. A 16 team, East/West coast to coast conference should get a decent bump, especially if there really isnt anything left to bid on. ESPN could simply bid on only us and not waste money on whats left of the MWC. In other words, give us what they are paying for the AAC and the MWC, then add a little Bump. It would be about $42 million just for our two conferences contracts combined. When divided by 16 thats $2.625 million... then add in a Bump. I think $5-6 million could be an easy to hit number and then work in some performance bonuses. Maybe ask for a championship game... wont pay what the Orange bowl does but maybe we can get a bit more there too.
Id love for the AAC to retain some 3rd tier rights.... I know USF and UCF could sell off ours locally for some extra money. I have a feeling Houston and SMU could also.

Its not huge, but it would solidly put us ahead of every other G5.

B12 doesn't expand, ESPN lures Texas and a few others to ACC. Starts a network and builds them up with their pundents, magazine and radio shows like they did the SEC and B10 before them.

Every day this becomes more likely. Then the AAC could add the former Big 12 teams.

Don't have to be ahead of SEC and Big Ten, or even ACC or Pac-12... Just the rest of the FBS.
