So no, they have much more games broadcasted, but will get very little TV $$

With ESPN3 being mentioned in the deal, should mean a broadcast of every game in some way.

Sure, but in terms of brand growth this seems to hurt CUSA in that only established fans will watch ESPN 3.

Wonder why ASN has only a 2 year deal? http://americansportsnet.com/asn-confere...year-deal/

Is CUSA going to see if beIN Sports will be a better partner for them, hence the long term deal with them? CUSA with beIN could be what the MW was to CSN at its beginning.

Wow so with the new deal announced today CUSA has a total of 10 games on traditional Sports channels. THis looks like a disaster to me. Where is the brand growth? How many games does the Sun Belt have on ESPN?

Back when we were there CUSA got about 12-15 games each being broadcast by Fox and CBSSN (so, between 25-30). Then it seems like I remember CSN picked up a few games and FCS picked up a few. Also, keep in mind, there were also about 12 fewer total games in the CUSA inventory to broadcast back then (12 teams vs 14 now). The new deal should provide for ACCESS to virtually every football game and to as many basketball/non-revenue sporting events as CUSA schools want to produce.

The down side is exposure and money. Though there is better access, the platforms are not well watched networks---so it will be tougher to gain new viewers and build a new following. Additionally, the money looks to be something less than half of the old deals signed with Fox and CBS.

Still, at least CUSA fans who want to follow their league now will have access to most all of the games. That wasn't necessarily true before. The only missing piece of the puzzle (and its a big piece) is whetehr or not ASN broadcasts will be mirrored on ESPN3 (or will ASN have its own streaming?). ASN has by far the most limited/spotty access of the new CUSA broadcast partners.

Gotta crawl before you walk, the biggest way we can grow our brand is winning. ECU didn't to get to the 40K-50K level just by TV coverage.

This deal is far from ideal but at least it gives the league's fans a quality option for every game. I for one hated the regional fox channels.

Deal is expected to pay $350,000 a year. The conference goes from 14 to 5 million a year. If so, that is even less money than was expected

I saw 11 football and 6 basketball and one of ESPN's is CCG and one of CBSSN's is Basketball tournament championship game. ASN can broadcast selected other championships.

I wonder if it is even that much. Where is the money coming from in this new tv contract? No money from ESPN, 1 million or so from CBS and no money from BEIN network( at least I think no money). Plus the league will have to pay for their ESPN 3 content. Is it possible that they league actually as a tv contract in which they are in negative financial territory?

Smock article:

What makes you think ESPN isn't paying for the content?

RE: OT-New TV Partner For CUSA
Well, at $250K a year we should have heard the last of "all G5 football is the same" from CUSA posters. Though, the current company line is that this is just the way it will be for all G5's in future negotiations--they just were in the unfortunate position of being the first G5 to ink a deal in the new era of cord cutting. They don't believe conference composition played any role in the pay cut.

Of course, that is demonstrably incorrect. The old CUSA 14 million dollar contract was cut immediately after the defecting teams joined the AAC to roughly half its former amount (about 6-7 million). After a trial run of 3 seasons under the last few years of the reduced old contract, the "new CUSA" membership hit the open market with a track record of ratings numbers. The resulting open market media price was another cut---down from about $500K (the reduced per school value of the old contract) per team to $250K. It's obvious, in light of the massive Big10 contract, that this cut in CUSA value was driven almost entirely by membership changes. Now that they have established an open market value based entirely on the new membership, my guess is that as they build their programs, their pay out will begin to progress upward from here.

I wouldn't bank on that. A year or two (maybe three?) ago, somebody posted a spreadsheet of FBS attendance in the BCS era. I downloaded it, played with it and updated it for a year or two, color coding by old conference and new conference etc etc.

Most of the teams now in the MWC or MAC now had about the same attendance in 1998-2002 as they did in 2008-12. Why should we expect the former Sun Belt now CUSA teams to be different? Troy and FIU and UNT and Louisiana Tech and Rice are what they are. They've been what they are for 20+ years.

It's a little different for the new generation of FBS programs, the South Alabamas and Middle Tennessees and UTSAs and ODUS and Charlottes. MAybe those guys look like UCF in 20 years. But it's just as likely that they look like Troy or SJSU.

FIU hasn't had a program for 20+ years 01-wingedeagle
FIU football started in 2002, joined FBS in 2005.
