I've watched for 25 years as the University of Idaho has taken the path of least resistance at every possible opportunity. And I'm not just talking about athletics here. It's not that the school tries and fails, it's that it doesn't even try. The state and committed people spent 100 years building a fine university, and inept leadership has been tearing it down bit by bit ever since. Athletics are just the most visible part of a systemwide problem.

I can't take it anymore. At this point, the only avenue I have left to voice my displeasure is to close my wallet and tell them why. So that's what I'm doing. And I'm far from alone. Many who've given a lot more generously for a lot longer than I have are doing the exact same thing.

Walk a mile in our shoes before you start lecturing us on who's a fan and who isn't.

Walked in those shoes.
Paid for tickets and paid into the booster club when we were sending teams to play multiple money games and didn't even have 63 players on scholarship (the FCS limit) even though we were FBS. Watched a fourth year coach win one game and not get fired because we could come up with $400k to get rid of him.

Saw an AD have take $350,000 of a $500,000 payout and send it to a P5 school because he had not checked all of the files when he got the job and had scheduled a game the same day as another game and have to buy his way out of the other game.

Had a coach who lived in a hotel room get a DWI and eventually fired. AD tried to hire a coach and the board refused to approve the contract. Hired Ray Perkins who quit 8 days before signing day because they refused to make him the new AD. He was told no coach would ever be AD. The next coach Bobo at one point offered to turn down a raise and extension if they would just give the assistants more money. He was replaced by Joe Hollis who ended up also serving as AD and his top two assistants made more than Bobo. He was fired the Sunday before a Thanksgiving Day game shortly after he was diagnosed with cancer. Announcement was delayed so he could tell the team but never did. Press release went out in the third quarter and the national media reported "coach with cancer fired at halftime"

Watched as the hoops coach who had bombed and attendance was falling go out of contract and get a new contract for less money because a couple guys who had the president's ear liked the coach and in the process killed a streak of being in the top 100 in hoops attendance.

Watched football get saved by a truly resounding 3-2 vote.

Yeah I've seen some **** and still put my money in.

I could give you a list of equivalent Idaho stories but the difference here is, our frustration is not confined to athletics. The university as a whole has been sliding in the wrong direction for decades and nobody in charge gives a crap.

Politicians and university administrators are motivated by fear and greed. If we keep blindly handing them our money no matter how many lazy, short-sighted things they do nothing is ever going to change. If this isn't the place to draw a line in the sand, I don't know where it might be.
One year we made a big leap in US News rankings. My son interviewed the acting chancellor to find out why. The person charged with answering the form letter was just copying prior year's answers, he made them update it. He didn't get the gig full time but he's pro athletics and is at LSU-Alexandria if you are shopping. 04-cheers

Sound like potentially the best employee Idaho has had in 2 decades.
Nice guy too.

Good letter from the UI President

https://www.insidehighered.com/views/201...race-essay

Why We're Leaving the Football Arms Race

Nevertheless, should we pursue conference affiliation, which conference makes geographic and institutional sense and what financial resources would be required to make us competitive in Group of 5 football? From a geographic perspective, the Mountain West Conference would be most desirable, but the average expenditures in that league, $38 million, are twice that of Idaho at $19 million, and literally price us out.

More typical Group of 5 expenditures, such as $29 million in the Mid-American Conference or Conference USA, still far exceed those at Idaho. In contrast, Idaho athletic expenditures are typical of Big Sky schools. Our expenditures are already subsidized by our students (though to a lesser extent than at many universities), and that subsidy is limited by our State Board of Education. Should we commit to major additional expenditures from students or donors in order to seek uncertain affiliation?

Based on USA Today second lowest in the Sun Belt.

RE: Sorry Vandals, best of luck
I also wish the Vandals the best of luck as they move forward. I hope they're dominating FCS in a few years' time.

I also understand that it sucks for the boosters. I hope the silver lining can be found quickly. At the very least, it's the right part of the country for this approach (close to it, at least), as Montana and the Dakotas have been regions that seemed to appreciate FCS success more than they craved FBS competition for a while now. If it weren't for the fact that Idaho has such a long football history and has tasted FBS, and that anomaly down south that is Boise St., this would almost be a no-brainer.

I definitely have a team to root for in FCS now.

I am sure they are still predicting the entire Sun Belt will be forced back down. I have not been on that site in at least three years. I think I checked it just to see the reaction of GS and App moving up. Other than that cant remember my last visit. Depressing bunch of success hating ********.

Here You go!

http://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthre...rop-to-FCS

I love that they start by calling us "the SlumBelch" and that saying FCS is better anyways and the Big Sky is "a move up" and then they move into talking about trying to make the Big Sky into an FBS conference. These people are insane.

The was the GS message board from when I joined until we rebounded from the Van Gorder five year reset on the program.

Sun Burnt, Sun Belch and daily attendance updates on all Sun Belt teams was the norm.

I am so happy I will never log into AGS ever again. They only joy they get is seeing teams that moved up fail in anyway.

As of right now, he is still there. Ther are reports that the AD and UAb and HC Bill Clark don't see eye-to-eye. Everyone needs to realize that the reason Clark is still there is to get completed vetted into the Alabama Education System retirement. That happens at the end of next year, before UAb returns to action. Don't be surprised if Clark is gone before UAb plays another down and that program falters before making a return to the field. I've always said it, that program is a dumpster fire, and it hasn't changed much, now it's just a dumpster fire with money flowing into it.

That's an interesting article. The president made the best decision for Idaho. I respect his decision and willingness to take a certain amount of backlash.

Unfortunately this was a situation where whatever decision he made would have been met with backlash . . . A totally No-Win Situation . . . . Sucks for Idaho . .
