OT: A Blueprint For Cheating
Every AD in the country now has one:

Bribes, blackmail, threats...not sure how they go away with it but a slap on the wrist is coming.

RE: OT: A Blueprint For Cheating
It seems to be a case of violations so severe the NCAA is incapable of dealing with them.

I get that feeling too, the NCAA decided that the scope of the violations were so large they might as well say **** it and move on to the next little fish.

Those Tar Heels owe USM. They took our football coach and we took their NCAA punishment.

What y'all got is about a 10th of what North Carolina deserves. They need a twenty year ban from post season, no tv, no share of conference revenue, either that or the Death Penalty.

Those crap degrees UNC gave all of those athletes is the real tragedy. They need a death penalty.

I'm still waiting on the NCAA to punish Miami for allowing Nevin Shapiro to run amok and shower his stolen money all over the program. The guy got an entire episode of American Greed made about him and the NCAA couldn't make a single violation stick to anyone.

RE: OT: A Blueprint For Cheating
Let me preface this by saying I'm neutral toward UNC (never been a fan but also don't have the deep seated yet understandable hatred that many do). I do hate the NCAA and actively pull for their demise.

Having said all that, I'm not sure if it's the NCAAs place to lay the hammer down here. I get the anger; this is a huge and far reaching scandal. I think their accreditation should be in jeopardy, I think our elected officials should go after them (fat chance I know) and make sure this never happens again, and I think anybody directly involved should be fired.

I will be the first to say that I don't know all the facts here, and my opinions are based on a couple of articles and some conversations I've had with coworkers with ACC ties. So please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm under the impression that the NCAA has not been able to directly tie the football/basketball teams to academic fraud here. I know a ton of players were enrolled in these sham classes over many years. Was this a case of people in the athletic department steering kids to easy majors to keep them eligible, or was it a case of the athletic department colluding with academic people to lie/cheat/promote fake classes?

If it's the latter, the NCAA should throw the book at them. If it's the former, or if the former is all the NCAA can prove, I'm not sure there is much the NCAA can do. Pick any random FBS team and look at the majors for their starting lineup. You will see a whole bunch of "general studies" or "social sciences" or "communications". That's not a coincidence. Just my two cents.

RE: OT: A Blueprint For Cheating
UNCs women basketball program is being set up to take the fall for the entire athletic program, Carolina walks with just a slap on the wrist for the rest of the athletic program. Whats really pisses me off about this, is all the millions of dollars Carolina has spent on legal fees, and PR firms, the other schools in the state, ie: App and 49s will be the ones paying the tab. Carolina will make a few discrete phone calls to the state, and have money syphon off that was earmarked for the other schools. The heels are going to walk away with just a slap on the wrist, and very little out of pocket expenses.

The evidence is there, they have even had men's basketball and football players admit that they were steered towards these "classes":

Everyone should be writing their AD and ask why they haven't immediately fired everyone in their compliance department?

RE: OT: A Blueprint For Cheating
Everything about UNC/CH simply reeks of deception, hypocrisy, and bullsh*t. I don't know if there will ever be any meaningful reckoning for that. But in the meantime, non-ACC schools could at least shun them in athletic events. It really is the least we can do.

If you aren't overly familiar with the scandal, and in reference to this point, google Tydreke Powell. He was a DT in their program during the years of the scandal. He did a radio interview, and it is damning. He was awarded a bogus degree after being drug to a "learning specialist" associated with (girlfriend of) a drug dealer/entrepreneur named Fats Thomas (same guy who provided PJ Hairston with the cars he was busted in that cost him his eligibility) and told to fail the test so he could be certified LD, which gained him a tutor/special test taking considerations, etc. He was graduated with a bogus degree, didn't make the NFL, and is now working as a low wage security guard. He is just one of hundreds.

This should be the Tydreke interview (there are other sources as well): http://media.102jamz.com/a/99022771/3liv...of-unc.htm

Even better, when he told HC Butch Davis that he wanted to take real classes, Butch told him if he wanted an education he "should have gone to Harvard". The athletes were enrolled in these bogus classes against their wills in some cases.

Also, in addition to the LD certification, documentation proves that many athletes were pumped full of well beyond usually prescribed dosages of Adderall, which is a banned substance for NCAA competition.

There is nearly no end to the wrongdoing of that program.

Shades of come of the stuff Real Sports found in a pretty damping segment they did a year or so back. There was a guy who didn't learn to read until his junior year when he taught himself using Dr. Seuss books in his dorm room at night.

The NCAA won't do anything because not only is UNC a money maker, but I really think they're afraid that exposing the worst offenders will expose all of the unsavory crap that goes on with athletes and their academics and expose the "student athlete" schtick for the sham is basically is. Once that happens the NCAA has no reason to exist.

I never really though about it this way but it makes a ton of sense.

I can remember Lawrence Taylor going into some detail of his time at Chapel Hill and describing basically what is being investigated...and he left school in 1981...
