1996. Bake Baker, a unknown QB who had thrown 1 incomplete pass the entire year, comes in the during 4th quarter and goes 8-10 for 159 yards and two TD's. The game winner comming with 3:00 left. Giving birth to the legend of Bake Baker The Touchdown Maker.

I happened to be sitting next to Bake Baker's dad the entire game. We were talking football the whole time. I recall when they put in his son that he joked that the coaches had given up. After Bakers first TD his dad got real serious. It was a bitter/sweet loss for me. Hated my eagles to lose but it was special for the nice man I was sitting next to that I guarantee will never forget his sons performance that day.

I'll never forget that game either, and it probably was the game that really ratcheted up the series between the two schools.

We had won in '93 in Stower's first year ... won again in '94, both games were very competitive. '95 was a great Mountaineer team, QB'ed by Scott Satterfield.

We were bad in '96 (record says it all), but we had to come from behind that year in the 4th quarter to beat VMI ... that is how bad we were.

Even so, we really were in control of that game until Baker came in. Probably the best relief QB appearance off the bench I can think of in Paulson Stadium history. The only one that comes as close is UTC's Robinson, but his was a losing effort.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. After the game I talked to a good friend on the staff and made the comment; "Bake is either the ultimate game day player, or we've got serious issues evaluating talent." His reply, " Not my position." Bake started every game after that.

Before that game we were a running team. After it we threw the ball all over the field.

Bake Baker. If I was around back then would have hated this guy on principle alone.
