My cable provider has a slot for the SEC Network 2. Right now nothing is airing on it. My question is, what if we did a JV with the SEC and ESPN where we broadcasted our entire catalog on the SEC platform of networks? We would still get ESPN3 exposure, ESPN could purchase key SBC match ups for airing on ESPN2 and ESPNU. But, given the pairing with SEC content we could maybe get $10m a year out of the deal given the increase in value the SEC Network would get with more ad revenue coming in...just a thought outside of the box.

Do they really gain anything to warrant this deal? I doubt there would be any increase in ad revenue since the two conferences cover the same area.

I would love to see that though.

Quite frankly, I'm not in favor of any extension unless: There are no restrictions on rights to games not carried live on ESPN non-internet networks. They don't pick it up, we can sell it whomever without geographic restrictions. I'd also announce that unless our deal is exactly the same as CUSA, that the deal will be for 1 year. No locking up of content unless there's a strong reason to do so.

ESPN doesn't like it? We can go to FS1 or NBCSports or CBS Sports or anyone else or just give our content to broadcasters.

We aren't going to get a bunch of money for our content. Lets just preserve flexibility.

The last TV 'deal' has been a disaster. If ESPN wants to lock up our content, they'll have to give us something in return.

I don't disagree with this, but it's worth mentioning that part of the issue here is that the SBC doesn't have a lot of leverage to use as ammunition when negotiating our media contracts....Adding to our misery is that outside of a few schools, there isn't a demand from non-espn broadcasters to carry our content.

With ESPN we can watch our team's games on the browser. Pretty much every game. There is a lot to be said for that. I'm not really up for following CUSA into oblivion for a token payment just to say we are getting paid.

Plus, we do end up on ESPN2 or ESPNU here and there.

I've personally thought that it would be extremely forward thinking of the SBC to partner with a streaming service (like Netflix) and offer football and basketball on there. I'm sure we could work it out financially where it's pretty much break even for us money wise but a whole lot more exposure. Honestly, I'm not an expert on any of it by any means and I'm not sure the SBC would have enough leverage to make it work. Just a cool thought.

Interesting concept. An SBC channel, so to speak, on a Netflix or HULU. We would probably have to be in the hook for production cost and then sell the content to the service provider. How we would get paid would be interesting. We would have to put some aside for marketing where we push viewers towards such services. Would be tough, but interesting.

We can create an SBC app for streaming devices. I'm not sure how that's better than WatchEspn though.

Is ESPN financing it now? They pay a small amount and the schools are on the hook for producing and then have to be happy with midweek games. I bet the SBC could make more than ESPN is currently giving them. The question is will it hurt viewership. I agree it would decrease general access but not so sure it will hurt viewership all that much.

ESPN does currently pay us. It's peanuts buts more than zero.
