It's more than just "sunk cost". It's future money pledged by boosters. If we fire Pastner, the boosters that committed that money may refuse to pay it... So the University would be on the hook for the whole amount, instead of just waiting and letting the boosters handle it.

Don't worry - Pantsner is going to turn it around in year 8.

Great recruiting class.

New recruiting philosophy.

Next year's Villanova.

Perfect recruiting base for Bruce Pearl.

I seriously don't believe the contract and related documents wouldn't have some legally binding language making the boosters personally liable to the UM for the funds. I don't think the university or Pastner would have agreed to anything less than that.

This isn't a PBS type pledge week type of deal.

Hard to believe with their current list that Pastner wouldn't even be a consideration.

Players like Tony Parker, Jordan Adams and... Shaq Goodwin??? Neither here nor there, I think anyone with a lick of sense knows that to succeed at high-major college basketball you have to "get" players.

On that note, doesn't Chicago have that reputation as well?

Yikes, that list is pretty rough.

You would think a school like GT, with an endowment almost 9X that of UM, could try to go big. I know they're still paying Hewitt, but they've got multiple big $ donors.

GT is getting rid of a coach whose team "crushed" us in last year's preseason scrimmage, as I remember. Yet another indication of just how far we've dropped.

I doubt the University is responsible. The compensation allowed for state run university employees is capped. I understand your point that future donations(post JP's contract getting paid) could be at stake, but I seriously doubt that.

No one is going to touch JP while he is still at Memphis because of his contract.

A new school will not have to pay Josh $2.6 million a year.

But JP would have to walk away from a pile of money. Doubt that will happen.

He will be made whole as long as the other school pays enough.

The two parties could come to a mutual agreement that Memphis would make up the difference if he took another job. Memphis would agree to it, obviously, to save on what the other school was paying. Pastner would agree to it, because if he rides things to the bottom here he will be toxic (or at the very least even more toxic) and may have a problem getting a high level assistants job, much less a head coaching job.

It would need to be a place willing to pay a million dollars a year or so to make it worth it on Memphis's side (so we'd be on the hook for 6.6 and might be able to get away with a 5 million lump sum or something like that) and also be prestigious enough that Pastner could save some face to make it worth his while. So far the only school to express even passing interest was UTSA which only paid the coach they just fired around 200k year, and so kinds fails on both sides of the equation.

As it is, it looks like Pastner's reputation is already too damaged for this to actually be pulled off.

Yup, all contracts can be renegotiated as long as both parties are willing...
