The REALLY interesting piece of news
Benson said a 2013 financial decision by the Group of Five schools drove the move. That year, the Group of Five conferences decided each of the leagues would receive up to $12 million in College Football Playoff distribution based on a maximum of $1 million per school.

That maximum was later changed to $10 million which made it easier for the Sun Belt to shrink its membership. With Idaho and New Mexico State, the Sun Belt has been ranked last among the Group of FIve conferences in recent years, Benson said.

If that's the case then I see why we got let go.

I also think more contraction may well be coming soon in other conferences. Between this and performance money and declining TV money it makes a lot less sense to keep poor on-field performers around.

Yeah I had seen some posters say 10 mill max before but never posted a link to back that up so now after the confirmation of this from Karl Benson this move makes more sense to me.

Yes, very interesting. We all assumed the number was $1million up to 12 schools. This makes CUSA's situation even worse.

Well that makes expansion even more unlikely.

Although, NMSU and Idaho were trending up, I'm ok with them leaving. I wish them the best of luck and have no ill-will toward their fans.

Yes, because it affects a schools budget oh so much...

Had that decision been made in 2010-11, the WAC might have survived. At least had enough of a core remaining to entice the Montana's to join.

RE: The REALLY interesting piece of news
Is anyone able to find any further evidence of this apparent change to 10 million? Is this a change that perhaps has not been publicized yet? I have been unable to find any reference to it other than the cbssports article.

This is the official payout structure. I guess it comes down to what actual revenues end up being.

This doesn't offer any specific breakout beyond saying that the G5 is sharing $75 million to be split as the G5 wants.

Where did KB get the 10 million dollar figure? Is the payout structure about to change?

RE: The REALLY interesting piece of news
According to this article, the SBC took in just under $12m from the 2014/2015 playoff.

RE: The REALLY interesting piece of news
That was the first I've heard of the payout being at $10 million versus the $12 million that it has been.

If ANY of the Sun Belt schools made the decision based on ~165k/year, then they have no need to be in FBS. It's just not enough of a needle mover to make that big of a deal.

Oh I agree with you but what I was thinking is if the payout was $12 million it didn't make sense to me to let these two go. You would be leaving money on the table.

With the payout capped at $10 million and more money added to the performance payout it also means more $$ splitting that performance portion less ways.

Also makes sense where it comes to playing G5 vs P5 OOC games based on the advocate article. If the case is $10 million, then I don't see the need to call on anyone else to expand.
