Fran Dunphy has rallied Temple

The Owls were headed towards purgatory on Dec. 13 when they fell to 4-5 overall after an overtime loss at home against Saint Joseph's.

Now, Temple may be headed towards heaven.

The Owls come from behind win over UConn on Thursday night in North Philadelphia was their 11th victory in their last 14 games and that triumph puts Temple in position to reach the NCAA Tournament and win the American Conference regular season title.

The Owls have swept both UConn and Cincinnati while also owning a win over SMU. If Temple beats Villanova next week at the Liacouras Center, it's going to be awfully tough to keep this team out of the NCAA Tournament.

This is going down as one of the better coaching jobs of Dunphy's career, which is saying something considering the run this guy has had over the past 25 years.

The Owls lost two key players from last year's team that should have reached the NCAA Tournament in Will Cummings and Jesse Morgan, but still find themselves in an advantageous situation in mid-February.

He has done a good job with what he has, but he is to blame for what he has. He is a poor recruiter and we should be in the tournament every year with no excuses, as well as making a deep run every few years. Our history, facilities, and recruiting grounds make it inexcusable to not at least be making the tourney.

Dunphys ability to coach X’s and O’s has never really come into question. His recruiting on the other hand has been the sticking point. There are very few if any coaches in the country that get more out of players with just average talent, and that’s part of what’s frustrating for Temple fans, how good could Temple be if it had the talent at the level of the other top teams in the AAC?

To be fair...I feel schizophrenic when it comes to Ollie. Some games I feel like he is HOF-caliber. Other times I feel like I could do a better job.

Like Temple fans have said, Dunphy is one of the best X's and O's coaches. If he had Jay Wright's recruits, Temple would be a title contender every year.

This is exactly it, when Temple beats a team like SMU, UConn, Cincinnati or the top 10 ranked teams they’ve beaten over the past 8 years we know it’s X’s and O’s because no why the talent is better.

When Temple loses to ECU, Houston at home by 1000 and St Joes by 1 we get frustrated because with better talent these losses may not happen when the kids have an off night.

With the talent on Temples roster there is very little margin for error and that’s what gets frustrating. He was voted conference coach of the year last year for a reason and it for sure wasn’t the roster.

Our fan base is split between wanting him to stay or go. Id say probably about 60/40 or so in favor of him staying. People have their minds made up you just hear from the two different sides.

From an outsiders perspective I'd give dunphy a chance to recruit in the aac for a few more years. His pitch may be easier as I think the AAC is more marketable than the A10 so if the conference can help him recruit it will pay off having an x and o guy. I know its a lot easier from my perspective. But in fairness Calhoun may have been one of the greatest x and o guys of our generation and i am now watching the exact opposite, at least at this stage in his career. I'll take the x and o guy based on the last 2 years.

Good coach, poor recruiter. Time to move on.

He was an average recruiter in the A-10 as well. It is not going to change.

Nobody is shoving Dunphy out the door. It would be nice to see a sweet 16 or better before he leaves. Prototypical Philly college coach who stayed in the city (i.e. Chaney, Martelli, Wright,...).

Dunphy's contract goes through 2021 (some say 2020) I don't believe there is any chance of Temple firing him before then. I'm on the keep Fran side; (his game planning and in-game strategies are great, he is a positive ambassador for Temple) though I wasn't after sitting through the Houston game. So pesik is correct; our fan base is mixed, and sometimes individual fans are mixed.

The thing is our recruiting has gotten better. Our freshman class is very talented and Lowe, Alston, and Ernest are going to be very good players and pair them with Obi and a Josh brown plus our 2016 recruits ( who i happen to like very much) and I think our talent level is improving.

Yeah when you're tied for 1st in the conference, MY first instinct is to string the coach up by his short hairs!

Jeez, what did they put in the water in Philly for you Temple fans to act this way?

The problem with Dunphy is that he has put a ceiling on our program that typically involves making the tournament and promptly losing in the first round.

Temple has won 2 NCAA tournament games in 15 years (the last 5 years of Chaney and the first 9 of Dunphy - this is year 10 for Dunphy). Your fanbase is all over Ollie for missing the tournament last year and not playing as well as your fans think you should be this year (two years after winning a NCAA championship).

Who is really acting crazy here?

I go back and forth. I don't hold the St. Joes or Houston losses on him. Always a battle in the Big Five and St. Joes is a good team. Houston was right over winter break. Players can lose focus.

But letting ECU beat us right after we knocked off SMU was terrible coaching.

Dunphy deserves a chance to coach a team loaded with talent. But thanks to his spotty recruiting that opportunity hasn't emerged.
