Seriously, I think Memphis may lose at Tulane on the 13th. With the talent the Tigers have, their record is absurd.
Can't Pastner be moved further down the bench? With 7 games on the schedule, why not let Stoudamire run things for awhile, or even Lawson, and see what the changes bring.
I realize that it would effectively neuter Pastner, but he's already neutered. You don't really expect him to light the conference on fire regardless, do you? If the experiment works, perhaps you could keep Stoudamire and/or Lawson going into next season, and if Josh doesn't like his place on the bench he can negotiated a settlement.
Long story short, the Ol Flagship Memphis is a shipwreck right now. I think the AD needs to take control of that program. This season is done and maybe those other two guys bring something to the table. I don't want Memphis to have mass transfers, and this may stem the tide.

A question I have is if Pastner is gone does the Lawson connection leave also? With a new coach coming into a high profile position will he be expected to honor the Lawson assistant coaching agreement? Would a new coach want to come in with a clean slate and a completely new staff? What’s the Tigers fans feeling on this?

In any conference you have winners and losers, if Memphis was having a successful season then one of the other teams wouldn't be.

I would hope the new coach gets to make that decision, but why would he not keep Lawson, Sr.? The guy was a great coach in HS, for years. His two oldest sons are returning as sophs, and he has two more sons on the way, who are supposedly better than the first two. And they all live in Memphis.

Assistants are hired for recruiting. I would say that's a pretty good start, lol.

I meant it as a true question, not as a flame. My only thought is would a high profile coach want to come into a situation where he has an assistant coach who can hold 4 top recruits over his head for leverage when it comes to lineups, playing time, rotations, offensive or defensive schemes that could favor certain players styles and abilities ect when he didn't make that deal in the first place.

Good points and we've already seen that playing out this year. Lawson is a ball hog with bad shot selection. The kid is soft too.
Don't think I've seen one dunk from him all year. He jogs on defense (when he even bothers) and only visits the bench when he's in foul trouble.
He was terrible against Houston, so our idiot coach decides to scream at the football walk on Sam Craft. 01-wingedeagle
Personally, I don't care if the Lawson's leave or not. As long as Pastner is gone.

Yeah, I didn't think you were flaming, at all. I just think almost any coach would take on Lawson, given he has 2 great recruits who will be sophs, and 2 more on the way. And if Lawson isn't retained, there is a chance he would hit the road with all his boys. What coach in his right mind would let that happen?

I just think the positives outweigh the negatives, especially since Daddy is actually an accomplished HS coach, instead of a truck driver, lol.

Only because you quoted it can I see this moronic post by the self proclaimed board moron. Move the head coach down the bench? Demote the head coach? Congrats, most idiotic post of your long storied history, cite me one example of this in the modern Era or any Era, do you just post constant nonsense cause you know nothing about how stuff works?

Well, this wasn't one of BEH's brightest moments for sure, but I wouldn't be that harsh.

In all fairness, give Pastner a break.

Could he be doing better? Yes. Is more expected of him at Memphis, especially with his recruiting prowess and coming off Coach Cal? Yes.

But I think he's doing okay, granted he's gradually getting worse but it's not easy following a legend, as no one, not even Coach K, could keep up what Cal was doing year in and year out at the end.

Pastner has never had a losing season and consistently made the NCAA's and NIT. I realize that's not enough alone at a place like Memphis but from an outsider's perspective, he's doing okay.

It was a great point...and while recruiting is important...most top HC hire Asst Coaches who normally specialize in one area (i.e. offense, defense, low post play, etc...), so that their team can improve.

Beholden to a father of top recruits is really not a playing strategy, as that "dad" who is an asst coach knows he can never ever be fired...and if you bench is son(s), the star, he will just take his sons' with him...hence why you never really want to make a deal with a devil like that. (Let alone his "sons" may not be the best fit for "team" players...as far too many are just talented individual players that end up not meshing well with a team).

Its not a coincidence that Dedric Lawson leads the team in Mins played (total and per game), even though he is just 7th on the team in FG% and has almost double the turnovers as the next player on the team.

Have you even watched any Memphis games besides the UCF one? Lawson started the year on fire, probably playing better than almost any freshman in the country. He is also a McDonald's AA.

And we have no backup at the 4 spot, other than a walk-on (McDowell), so of course he is going to get minutes. And he only gets 2 more minutes a game than our 2 other best players, Goodwin and Tarrant. And both of them have backups.

Lawson got hurt in December, an abdominal injury, and really hasn't been the same since. He lost what little lift he had, and can now barely jump. That's why I think his shooting % has been down, b/c he has missed a lot of bunnies where he obviously couldn't jump.

But even with all that, he still leads the team in rebounding, and is second in scoring.

Only in the last two games has he started to look like he did early. He still is listed on draft boards as making it after next season.

And his brother, KJ, played a lot of minutes early, but also got hurt, and isn't playing at all, although he has been cleared to play. May get a medical redshirt. But he has been sitting on the bench since December.

So, your dime store analysis is so far off as to be laughable.

The amount of money pastners making he needs to perform much better, Memphis has McDonald's all-americans on that team no excuse.

What? We always say Peter Brady from the Brady Bunch. Perhaps Josh will have plenty of work in a Brady Bunch reboot and movie in the next few years.
