Exactly. This is just another way to show how Pastner's lack of success is costing the program money. Attendance would increase substantially with a coaching change (unless it's a completely idiotic hire).

Actually it has to be a very good "name" hire to affect attendance enough to pay JP's $2.6M and new coach's $2.5M

JP's $2.6M is already spent. So the analysis is can a new coach increase attendance enough to offset his salary. If you can hire someone around $1M, the answer is a resounding yes.

I know, I know - 2 different buckets. But if the school gets the ticket revenue, and if it's declined by > $1M, then it doesn't matter who pays the new salary.

Now Bowen just sounds crazy. Chris Wallace would not be the one negotiating on the FedexForum's behalf.

How does the school not have attendance numbers and how does the school not know how much they were paid last year?

Maybe you aren't supposed to know everything.

exactly.

Grizz run the turnstile and they keep the records, not the UofM...and the Grizz are private, so they don't have to tell the CA, or the fans, jack ****

that's done by design, and it's smart business...they don't want the dirty laundry shown to the neighbors.

That's it. Calkins and Vernon and Martin can whine all they want. Tell them to file the FOIA with the city - since it's a public building and all. They won't have actual data either.

Of course Bowen knows the numbers. He also knows the score - and that he doesn't have to play ball with the CA on this one.

It will? Substantially? You'll stop the bleeding. People aren't coming back until we're competitive.

How many of the ticket sales losses are due to people just deciding they don't want to go to Tigers games anymore and how many are due to disgust with Pastner's program.

If it's the former, a new coach won't matter. If it's the latter, a new coach does. If it's the right hire of course.

The losses are due to the team not being competitive anymore because of Josh Pastner. Hiring a new coach by itself will keep more people from leaving. But, unless it's an A+, win the press conference hire, I don't believe it's going to bring many people back in and of itself.

And I don't thing we're going to be making an A+, win the press conference hire. We're going to hire some low to mid major up and comer that no one's heard of and cross our fingers and hope for the best.

If that happens, I don't think that attendance will substantially improve until people have reason to believe we're going to be competitive.

There will be a bounce in attendance no matter who the hire is. There are many I've spoken to - including close friends and relatives - who have said they will come back only when he's gone. And they said they would come back to the first game whenever the new guy is hired - no matter the name.

Sustainable attendance in the top 15 or so will come from winning. But the bounce comes with any change. If you say we're around 10k now and we were around 15-16k for the prior decade, then we probably get a new hire bounce to around 13k. The rest will need to be won back.

I know better than to get involved in serious political discussions here. And I really didn't express any politics in the post - certainly not any bile. Just thought it was a funny comparison. When we say that the coach was fired because that is a line that just can't be crossed and all. Tic was fired because he was a mistake. This was the smoking gun needed. Even if you're an old Dem-er, you gotta admit it's funny to compare.

the building is not public.

Actually, under law it likely is.

Hell, the FedEx Forum says it is:

FedExForum is the largest public building construction project in Memphis history.

I thought the city ceded control of the building in exchange for Hoops, LP to be responsible for any operating losses.

According to 10 CFR 420.2 [Title 10 – Energy; Chapter II -- Department of Energy; Subchapter D -- Energy Conservation; Part 420 -- State Energy Program; Subpart A -- General Provisions for State Energy Program Financial Assistance], the term public building means “any building which is open to the public during normal business hours, including:

(1) Any building which provides facilities or shelter for public assembly, or which is used for educational office or institutional purposes;

(2) Any inn, hotel, motel, sports arena, supermarket, transportation terminal, retail store, restaurant, or other commercial establishment which provides services or retail merchandise;

(3) Any general office space and any portion of an industrial facility used primarily as office space;

(4) Any building owned by a State or political subdivision thereof, including libraries, museums, schools, hospitals, auditoriums, sport arenas, and university buildings; and

The numbers have officially come in. We're sitting at an average attendance of 5,889 this season so far. We are in jeopardy of getting NO money this year (must be above 6k). We have to hit 6,666 for the next 3 games to get above the 6k mark.

Last year was 7,127 average
