(02-08-2016 04:12 PM)RowdyRoost Wrote:  Southern Miss's most heated rivalry that fans enjoyed was with Louisville. Sadly, for us, they went on to greener pastures.

The administrations tried to manufacture rivalries with Tulane (that stupid bell) and Memphis (black and blue game)... but they were so one-sided that fans didn't really see them as intense rivalries (we lead the all-time series against Memphis 40-22-1 and we lead the all-time series against Tulane 23-7).

So, now the push is to make Louisiana Tech our rival. I've enjoyed the recent games... they've been very competitive. I'm sure they will try to build UAB up when they return as well... but the road will be long for them. But as someone else said... USM fans always want to beat Marshall. And that's really out of respect... similar to the respect we had for ECU. We don't hate Marshall and ECU, but we respect that they regularly put up strong football teams.

What do you consider strong and regular?

Is being above .500 5 out of 11 seasons strong and regular? How about 8 (6...500 or below) out of 11 seasons being with in 1 game of .500 be strong and regular?

Would being under .500 or 1 game of .500 in 10 of 17 seasons be strong and regular?

Here's my last question...

would UofL fans call S. Miss a rival? Don't know, just asking. But I do know a ton of UofL fans and to me they would have a hard time calling any team not above them today as a rival. At any point in time. Well one more. Did S.Miss consider UofL a rival the first 5 or 6 years in CUSA or just when UofL became more of a national name in football?

At one time, WKUWYG.. i'd say yes, UofL was a legitimate rival school of USM at one time (Record USM 18W-11L vs. L'Ville on the FB field).

I can see how they were a rival to S. Miss fans but UofL fans usually have their nose turned up and it didn't just start in the last 10 or so years.

But I guess main question would be was UofL football a S. Miss rival from the go or built after they started becoming a national name? Or did S. Miss fans consider them the same as some of CUSA teams today? UofL wasn't this growing program till the very late 1990s and really only their last 4 or 5 years in CUSA

of course, we expect a L'ville fan (just so you know it's not aimed at making fun of you WKUYG) to ignore history in order to make a "We were never rivals" arguments :) (From what I remember, Schnellenberger himself would bad mouth USM by name because he hated the fact that he only beat us 2 out of 8 times).

It wasn't really until 2000 that we just seemed to lose to them (We've lost the last 6 in a row against them since 2000), but in the 80's and 90's we had their number. (until 2000 we were 18-5 against them. so if you argue based on records, no they weren't a rival, they were our beyotch *grin* ).

No. That is average.

How about 8 (6...500 or below) out of 11 seasons being with in 1 game of .500 be strong and regular? No. That is average.

Would being under .500 or 1 game of .500 in 10 of 17 seasons be strong and regular? No. That would be regularly average at best, in my opinion.

Louisville would not call us a rivalry anymore, but at one time they certainly would have. Just mention "Mills Kills", and make a reference to that game, and see what type of emotion comes on their face.

RE: Now that we all know each other...WHO'S YOUR RIVAL IN CUSA???
everyone. and no one. cusa 2.0 disintegrated, taking most of our historic rivals with it just as our program cratered. at that point, anyone we found standing on the other sideline was our rival -- for at least one afternoon.

rivals are massively overrated, and may be totally unnecessary. the ecu game was always circled on the calendar because something insane ways happened, not necessarily because of the rivalry. 28 defensive points, can't kick a PAT, simultaneous possession in the end zone, 98 yard int return, extra point returned all the way . . . Streakers. It was always something.

RE: Now that we all know each other...WHO'S YOUR RIVAL IN CUSA???
I understand S. Miss fans feeling the way some fans do. Western fans felt it for years after the SBC broke apart. But the point I was making..rivalries can be built given some time. Just my opinion but I bet most S. Miss fans did not feel the same way about UofL the first 5 in CUSA as they did when they left. One difference with UofL is they s had a national basketball program from day 1 in CUSA so there was always that.

With movement at a stand still ...five years from now a lot more rivalries will be grown. For all of us.

Another point I think some S. Miss fans don't get...your program didn't fall apart because of your rivals leaving. But right now this version CUSA is probably better for you. So you get a chance to grow your program back along with building new rivals. I know it's hard to say for sure and as fans we are going to always believe what we want. But with the S. Miss program falling apart the rebuild might still be years off if this was the same conference some of you are missing.

I wasn't drawing a causal relationship between realignment the collapse of our football program. I was merely observing that they happened at the same time, and as such they had a dramatic effect on how we viewed, well, just about everything.

We're not quite there yet, but I'm developing a healthy sports dislike for ODU. If the conference has some stability, I can see this turning into a good rivalry.

it's disturbing to see what the definition of "rival" has turned into. I didn't dislike ecu or memphis. if anything, I respected them more due to the longevity of the series.

For us (Marshall) I would say it's (in this order):

1. WKU
2. MTSU
3. Southern Miss

I think ODU may be at some point, and Charlotte would make sense as well some day...

Our historical rivals are now residing in other conferences. We are treading water at present.

Yeah kinda feels like you guys are relics of a bygone C-USA and refuse to forget it the way the other holdovers have, probably due to tenure.

Rice slogs through alignment and rolls with the punches. POOR UTEP is on an island surrounded by crappy MWC and sun belters. Marshall thinks they are waaaaaaaaay better, relevant than they are 03-lmfao. Don't think anybody forgot the MAC conference jumping, SoS, don't even get me started. 05-stirthepot

The MUTS will always be our biggest rival and vice versa, and that is the best thing C-USA version 9,000 inherited: an in tact rivalry that ESPN has covered and fan bases care about. I'm sure they and odu are the only reason we are here anyway.

WKU rivals: Middle, Marshall, and you guys (SMU) after the incessant smack and butthurtitude. In bball, I hope ODU (call it the Selig Cup) and UAB

Yea nothing screams rivalry excitement like WKU vs MTSU... 03-zzz

Nobody outside of your 2 fanbases gives a 01-rivals
Ugh re-re-join the MAC already

I feel a closer tie to all the old Sun Belt members (When it was good) and USM.

I hate no one and wish everyone the best OOC.

My post wasn't meant to slight WKU in anyway. We need more teams like WKU (who are dedicated to improving football) in this conference. I certainly respect WKU... but I didn't include them in the Marshall/ECU reference because we haven't regularly played you guys like we have them. I do believe WKU is at that level, though.

As for Louisville... there is A LOT of history. We pretty much place blame at their feet as to why the old Metro basketball conference didn't become a football conference as well. When you think of what could have been.... Virginia Tech, Florida State, South Carolina, Southern Miss, Louisville, Memphis, etc... all in a football conference together... would have been nice. But Louisville had ridiculous financial demands that caused most of those teams to bolt in 1991. And on the field... it was always competitive... whether it was the '89 Hail Mary win by Brett Favre... or the contentious "icy field" game where somebody turned the sprinklers on the night before... or the "Mills Kills" game. Not to mention some big C-USA battles where it was often between us and them for the title. Lots of tense ball games.

USM is LA Tech's chief rival. And after we flipped their top DL prospect on NSD (Kaderrion Mason), it's gonna get even more heated. 05-stirthepot

http://csnbbs.com/thread-769089-post-12963952.html

It's really hard to believe this god-forsaken conference hasn't scheduled LA Tech vs Marshall --two of its best brands-- in a regular season football game yet. That's a potential rivalry just waiting to happen. I believe most CUSA fans would enjoy watching that one. But the idiots that schedule our cross division games have to pull their head out of their collective arses first.
