Um...not to be a wet blanket, but an increased buyout would be the only thing that would keep him around longer.

This is about rewarding a guy for a great season, short of maybe an AAC or MWC team with deep pockets deciding he was their guy and breaking off $2M+ per, it was always going to take a P5 offer to lure him away and I'm not sure I see the difference in $600k and $800k when looking at an offer from a P5 school.

RE: Brohm and WKU announce new contract
I think Western and every other school in this conference tops out at about $1,000,000 and even at that price it's going to affect other sports. CUSA prides itself on being a football and basketball conference and we all hope basketball turns around soon. But when it comes to money paying any coach a million dollars a year it's going to affect what each of us can pay for a coach at the other top sport.

Most CUSA basketball coaches are being paid well below what the average MVC coach gets and no where in the ball park when we are talking Xavier, Butler, Zags, VCU, Wichita St. Most CUSA coaches are being paid 40% less than MWC and even schools like Belmont.

So none of us are in a position to compete will the AAC when it comes to money for our coaches and while we could most likely raise it enough to keep a winning coach at one of our top programs from jumping to another G5 program...we would be putting basketball in danger if that coach started losing. Along with the football program because we couldn't afford the buyout.

Unless it's a very rare case we all are stepping stones and don't need to put our programs in danger trying to change that just for 10-15 programs that can afford to pay the 1.5 million (ACC/MWC). None of us can afford to pay any of our coaches what the lowest P5 program can.

I see this as a good contract for both parties

RE: Brohm and WKU announce new contract
I've been saying for some time that the day will come when some really smart people are going to realize they will eventually make a million dollars a year coaching at the some strong G5 schools, where they can become local legends without completely unrealistic pressures and be able to weather the offyear here or there without fear of the pink slip or the hot seat.

Brohm at WKU can eventually get paid a million dollars a year to coach football and decide when he's done and not have insane national pressure or unrealistic expectation. Or, he can take a job at a place like Kentucky, where after three years of not competiting with the likes of Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, or Alabama, he's going to get canned and be much older than the years should have aged him. I know coaches are competitive by nature and all think they can and will win anywhere, but a million dollars at our level isn't a bad setup at all.

Already turned down interview requests this past off season with Maryland and Virginia. He also mentioned "grass isn't always greener".

A great coach, hope he stays at WKU for the duration of the contract and beyond. A real boon for the conference having him, Skip Holtz, Doc, and hopefully USM's Hopson stay and be uber successful. Should have also mentioned UAB's Clark, a helluva' coach, who we all hope has nothing but success despite the mountain that he's been made to climb.

no questioning the latter....it's become mandatory as we all trudge forward....

however, some fans become uncomfortable with that when north carolina or tampa bay come knocking with twice the salary when the coach decides to leave

he may end up being the bower/beamer type....

he may love bowling green and all that it offers in satisfaction for both him and family...that may be enough for brohm (and there is nothing wrong with that)

money and fame offer different paths for some as the clock continues to tick-tock....

it's pretty cool when the school, fan base, and coaches all feel comfortable as support mechanisms for all parties involved...

I still contend that removing the no-compete clause coupled with the buyout reduction as an indication of what he eventually wants to do moving forward....

The $200k came from private donors and with benefits he could make a million dollars this year.

I'm glad to have him another year, beyond that I'm not holding my breath. Just being realistic. Obviously, I hope he stays a long time.

I agree. I think that Brohm's ties in KY are strong and he would love to stay in this area for the long haul. Removing the clause opens up the possibility of him getting the Louisville job if/when Petrino moves on. I hope he steers clear of the coach-killer job in Lexington.

I think football is put on the back burner for now and WKU turns all administrative eyes on men's basketball, which is in volatile situation with Harper and a divided fan base.

Yep. At a G5, it might as well be a 1 year contract. Glad we do have JB for 1 more, though.

Here are the other contract incentives that can put him over $1M. I assume he also gets paid for other items such as radio shows for one example.

Quote:The contract and terms are subject to approval from the Western Kentucky University Board of Regents. His additional contract incentives – $100,000 for a college football playoff appearance, $50,000 for a winning percentage of more than .500, $50,000 for a bowl win, $50,000 for a conference championship, $25,000 for being named CUSA coach of the year, $25,000 should public season ticket sales exceed 12,000 a year, and $50,000 for an academic progress rating of either 950 or 975 – remain unchanged.

I think Brohm will eventually go to the NFL and not another college....He did turn down several offers to be Offensive Coordinator of some big time college programs...

RE: Brohm and WKU announce new contract
A few things working in Western's favor with Coach Brohm.

Both his and his wife's families are in Louieville. He's a family type guy. From what I've seen that's more important than his ego like a Petrino. He's mentioned he's making a lot of money.

Bowling Green is a wonderful place to raise kids with 2 very good school systems.

He and his staff were all living in a development called the Traditions. Nice place with homes, very nice large condos and upscale apartments. He recently bought a house in a place called Olde Stone which is where much of the money folks in BG live.

He already has it rolling here. Easier to keep it going than to get to that level. He's built/building a team to his specifications. He's done a great job with what he inherited. But he's getting his guys in now.

He's been to several places in his career so he knows what is out there. He knows the good and the bad as far as situations for success.

Probably his biggest influence as a coach has been Schnellenberger. He knows you can build something special from the ground up. They still stay in touch.

Removing the no complete clause allows him to go to Louieville when it opens up. Everyone believes that's where he wants to ultimately end up. I have no problem with it at all. He's been great here.

I'll enjoy however long he stays here. We were told all year by people on this board that 'HE'S GONE' because we were having a good season. Guess what? He's still here. We're gonna enjoy the ride. No matter how many times you rub your hands together wishing him away. Lol.

Yeah, it's a good deal for both Brohm and WKU. It made it easier for him to leave for Louisville when it opens up (buyout is less and no compete removed), but also probably keeps him at WKU until that happens.

Not to be a negative nancy here but Maryland and Virginia aren't exactly upgrades, whether the money is right or not. If a coach is looking to move up, he usually wants to be in a position to win and not just go for a money grab.

2 mil a year at Maryland/Virginia would be great but when you don't win your division in 2-3 years you are done.

I think that's the point WKU fans are making. He won't jump at any P5 job. 1, 2, or more years of progression with this program could mean a big time job, or, as a lot of us think, UL will be foaming at the mouth for him.
