This town does love its hockey, so it could be a revenue sport. And it would provide separation/difference from BG.

The numbers back that up.

These are from 2013- 2014

UT would be just plain stupid to start a varsity team. No one would support it.

RE: @UTWomensHockey is a thing!
Wow, N. Dakota fits over 11,000 in their ice rink!

UT would definitely have to risk being part of a movement. Have those ever worked out? 03-wink

Any consideration of jumping into the fray would smartly have to consider available talent and the competition for already sparse talent versus an all-call for athletes without a sport, and starting them from scratch. With a movement locally to build clubs and high school teams, yeah, it would work and it would prosper. Also, the level of development of that sport simply isn't so deep that you couldn't build a competitive team from about any group of decent athletes be they figure skaters or soccer, handball and Lacross players. Other than that, dipping into overseas talent.

How do these attendance number compare against other niche sports? Example; Soccer or Softball

I could be wrong but I don't think any of those 36 schools actually make money on women's hockey. I'd guess women's hockey programs are supported more by the $250.00 - $300.00 per hour for private rink rental for high school and adult leagues than actual attendance.

Yeah, you are all right...... just like women's basketball. NO BODY watches that either and the team is BEGGING people to come watch them..... What a waste of time........

OH WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!!

Toledo women's basketball outdraws probably over 75% of the men's basketball programs around the country.

Why not women's hockey???

and yes I would go.....

RE: @UTWomensHockey is a thing!
It does raise an interesting question...and I'm not suggesting this is "apples to apples", but...what is the average attendance at UT for the following "non-revenue" sports? Is it more than 500 for any of them? I really don't know, so at the moment, I'm not trying to make a point, if there's one even to be made...

Men's baseball
Women's softball
Women's soccer
Women's swimming & diving

RE: @UTWomensHockey is a thing!
A quick check shows a 3 to 7 hundred K annual operating budget for college hockey. That doesn't include startup costs, facility cost (if you build) or schollies. Someone mentioned revenue from renting to HSs. Not sure what we're renting? Not an ice arena we don't have. If we eventually draw 2,500 per game (a pipe dream given the figures nationwide and given the two revenue sport competition in winter) we'd gross about $30,000 a game. Not sure how many games hockey plays but a women's program would bleed cash like crazy for years, probably for it's existence.

Women's soccer might be a bit above 500 per game. But every other sport is below 500

Still bring in more revenue than track. 05-stirthepot 03-wink

Soccer, Baseball & Softball are all under 200 average attendance. I don't believe any of the other sports track attendance.

I'm surprised soccer doesn't do better. Maybe a better marketing campaign could help, but it ain't gonna get above 500 in any foreseeable future IMO.

I have a group of friends that all played baseball in high school and enjoy the sport very much but we've never been to a Toledo game....1. because we never want to just venture over to Scott Park. 2. because our facilities suck. 3. because our teams generally suck. We could easily get soccer, baseball and softball above 500 attendees if they played on nicer fields we were proud of, on campus.
