csc turning students away
After class all day I trudge to savage with my backpack on for the game... Walk inside and hand them by back back to check. I have been to games with backpacks for 4 years... They say "sorry no backpacks." I say there is nothing but two notebooks and some papers in it. They say sorry. I explain its pouring rain and I am parked in the field house pking garage on the other side of campus. Are you really going to make me walk a half mile to my car in the rain?? They say "sorry I cant let you in."

I will not be attending tonight on principal. I guarantee I am not the only student that will run into this problem this evening..

I used to take my bookbag (backpack) with me directly from class. (years ago)

Maybe they're afraid you might do some studying.....

It's your own fault for going to class. Kids these days.

That really does suck. Hope you change your mind. I'd head to the rec and drop it in a locker or off in the bushes or I guess like you, get my dander up. Yep. Sucks.

Cold and wet. I stepped in a mud puddle. Not my day. Wasnt going to get back on bancroft and repark in lot 10. I had time to, but still. Papers in a backpack is not a threat...

I'm sorry to hear that. On a positive note, it's nice to know that I'm not the only student on this board!

Yet they let us in every home game with our diaper bag backpack. But only after a milisecond look inside to see if we are terrorists. Drives me crazy.

Wow, that is crap. Women carry handbags in all the time that are huge. They look in, sure, that's fine. I don't get the difference? 01-wingedeagle

It's a conspiracy. We all know a woman would NEVER be a terrorist, so why bother with their bags? Just diapers, bottles, extra nipples, and a bomb or two. Men, on the other hand, are damn sure going to be terrorists, especially the ones with the beady eyes. Never can trust those people. Always looking for an infidel to murder, and a virgin to serve HER hell for having to be with him. Not sure where they think they are going to find all those virgins. BGSU is about f**cked out.

(Addendum: tongue in cheek for those who completely missed that part - all, that is, except the very last sentence.)

I gather that they probably did not even offer an explanation because they probably don't even know what the rationale behind that rule is themselves. Obviously they could give the backpack the usual cursory check for any contraband and surely they were not concerned about the space it would take up in the stands-----the arena looked to be only about half full, if that.

Sounds like cogs in the bureaucracy just mindlessly following orders which is what they do. Of course these gate keepers are just the hired help and they have no authority to engage their brain or make any independent decisions anyway because exercising judgement is forbidden in these systems---so you should trace the problem to those who dream up these policy in the first place and in the matter of bureaucracies it is always better start at the top and work down.

If I were you I would send an inquiry to the Office of the President (= "CEO" in the jargon of the new university = business model) explaining just the facts of your experience (without too much personal commentary) and politely ask for an explanation of justification behind this presumably new policy and what is the purpose it is suppose to serve in a self proclaimed "student" friendly environment (or "customer" friendly environment to use the new jargon).

Try it. I bet you will get a responsible explanation and maybe even an apology.

Hey. If one bomb gets into any stadium anywhere and kills one person. The same people complaining here will be saying how could they let that happen? And you all know I'm right. It's the world we live in. We do this because it's the safe thing to do. The smart thing to do.

Check the backpack, then let it through. You can hide a bomb in a purse just as easily. Or tell them it's not a backpack, it's a European man bag.

That's okay if that's the rule... But if it is... Then why isn't the rule applied to larger or equal size female hand bags? Because the way someone where's it changes if you can bring it in or not? I handed the bag to the usher people to check. The bag was light and had nothing but two notebooks and some papers. Not even a calculator...

And because I have been to three games this season with one on, I am asking why it's an issue on our worst weather night of the season for the men. What was the crowd? 2,900? Could have used me.

Not sure you want the people at the gates using their own judgment on what they allow in.

Side note - I was in London and flying home from Heathrow on the Saturday before Easter back in 1989. That was about 4 months after the Lockerbie bombing brought a jetliner down over Scotland. I expected the security to be tight - and it was. Armed guards with assault rifles everywhere. I was more than a little concerned when a bag I was carrying on contained a PC and a portable printer that went through x-ray security - but I was never asked to remove it to have it inspected. I saw the x-ray of the bag and all you could see were wires running everywhere along with several opaque areas. I complained to the supervisor of security about the lack of inspection - and he just dismissed me like I was an annoyance. I was afraid to get on that flight knowing how inconsequential the security procedures were.

I would feel the same uneasiness about walking into any venue that has thousands of people in attendance knowing that security was not very good or thorough in their approach. It is the world we now live in.

I guess i fail to understand how an empty bag can cause a threat to a large group of people. More of a threat than ladys equally sized bag with also nothing in it...
