Southern Miss names Jay Hopson head football coach
Not a huge name or an up and coming OC, but a solid hire imo.

beat me to it.
I can live with it. he runs a spread offense, he recruits well, and his players seem to love him.

It is a relief. Hope he hits the ground running.
I am quite glad he is a proven HC. Guy took a total turd program at Alcorn and went 28-11 in the past 3 seasons with 2 championships.

I'm excited by the hire. Next question is what about the assistants?

can't find anything yet. I "heard" that one of the hangups was that we wanted to keep the staff together because we thought that would keep the recruiting class together.

one thought : he's a defensive guy, and we have an OC with zero experience.

Southern Miss names Jay Hopson head football coach
I've always believed we were missing opportunities by looking past successful coaches at the lower levels of D1 all these years.
That he has that HC experience will likely add a couple of Ws in the next couple of years vs guiding someone through that learning curve.
Hopson's loved by everyone who's had any experience with him. I think he'll be a great recruiter and face of the program. As much as I wish it wasn't an issue, the "one of us" crowd and people still moaning about Bower being let go should approve of his hire, and as much as I hate to go there, he's probably not coming into this looking for the next train out.
Funny story about Coach Hopson to illustrate his personality and sense of humor: I was a student during one of his assistant stints in the mid-'90s, and his office was barren aside from the necessities of the job. No pictures or posters on the walls, no shelves with memorabilia on them, nothing. One of my classmates commented to him about it one day, and Coach Hopson told him he did that because it was less stuff he'd have to take down and pack up when he was fired, as all coaches eventually are.

RE: Southern Miss names Jay Hopson head football coach
I am not against hiring "up-and-coming" coaches but usually the problem is a lack of HC experience. Hopson however, has coached at USM under Bower and has HC experience. I think he should retain the asst. coaches we have for the recruits and continuaty.

Spot on HP. Good hire. No, great hire. Something for everyone associated with USM. Successful HC experience, former coach under Bower. A players coach. Plus you got major gravitas to coach at Alcorn.
We backed into it but well done!

I'm good with the hire. He's not over the hill and has been a HC this century.

Congrats USM fans, seems like as good a hire as was available at this time. I know Hopson coached for you guys as well, but when he was at MU, he did a great job, hope he does that and more w/ you folks.
