Like the mix of age. Need to have a couple old timers to keep things in perspective. Been there, done that sort of thing. Oh man do we need to keep that D Line going uphill. That's the third leg of the stool. Without it you've got nothing. 13 NFL years says a lot to me.

Why burn bridges with the backhanded complement at the coaches who left.

03-melodramatic

They are competitors now. Backhand all you want like Todd on Park Street.

Don't agree with Dip often, but those comments were classless. 04-jawdrop

Lot of coaches wanted to be at WMU. They know the arrow on Fleck is pointed up and if they move on with him, they get paid.

Hell WMU is pre season favorite to win MAC and ESPNers love Fleck/WMU now.

WOW - LOL. Treating it as if we dumped them, not the other way around!

But,as NIU05 pointed out -- we're in position not to have to get some bad rebound-effect either -- we'll get good guys coming in.

I am quite surprised that the WMU marketing/communication folks let that pass. It comes across as petty and beneath an elite person. Not the best look for coach or for the university

Yeah, agree. I'm no PR whiz, but he could use a lesson on how to phrase things in press releases.

RE: New Hires
I dont agree with the backhanded jab at the coaches that left... but I do wonder what the dialog was like when they DID leave. I would bet they got a great offer and maybe didn't even clue Fleck in on the fact that they were entertaining other offers... For all we know, they just cleaned out their offices and left a sticky note on the door that said "Gone fishin". Then followed it up by poaching a couple highly ranked recruits the second their plane landed in Syracuse...

I mean... if THAT were the case I could understand a few back handed jabs... but if you are high profile and you have aspirations of heading up the ladder you better learn to have thicker skin...

Maybe he pissed folks off in the Marketing department at one time or another and they decided that hes on his own with this one

RE: New Hires
[Scratch my original post]

Basically, at first glance, he treated it as if He asked them to leave or something. But parsing his words, actually, it's not actually Quite all that bad. YES, he should have chosen better words -- and it deserves to have an eyebrow raised, Definitely. But it can be interpreted in different ways. I had to erase my critique because of the way I was parsing my own more PC version of what he should have said, hence, what he was trying to say -- which made me realize he wasn't so crass:

ORIGINAL QUOTE P1:
"In our program we are always looking to upgrade both from a student-athlete perspective as well as staff members."

It's just as blunt to coaching staff as it is to the athletes. It makes the mistake of making the impression he was wink-wink/nudge-nudge wanting them to leave or something, when, that certainly wouldn't be the case for all, and I'm sure he's at least rolling his eyes in frustration of the concept of coaches jumping to P5 (especially for being a new coach first experiencing a lot of this, while wanting to make a Power G5). BUT, it's no different than with athletes, say, leaving to the NFL too early. Whether the athlete moves on to the NFL draft early and was awesome -- or not as good as previous year -- he's going to want replacements being better than the ones previously, and we all know in the world outside of Ohio State & Alabama, there's plenty of room for that for most teams... Especially in the G5.

ORIGINAL QUOTE P2:
"While I want to thank our former coaches who have moved on, we accomplished that goal of getting better as a staff and feel this will help us to our third straight No. 1 recruiting class ...."

We accomplished that goal of getter better as a staff -- part of this statement can imply the process from day 1 up until now... both past & present & future... so his angle is, it's not stopping here, just because some left because they were good. It doesn't mean our coaching staff is going to be lesser. Oh No, it's continuing to improve, just like the athletes. IMO, though, still, he should have said it a bit differently:

MY RECOMMENDED VERSION OF P2:
"I want to thank our former coaches who have moved on, as we accomplished that goal of getting better as a staff when we brought them on, and at the same time, I believe we have continued to do so with our new hires, which will help us to our third straight No. 1 recruiting class..."

Then they should be fired immediately.

RE: New Hires
I would pose the question, isn't it valid to work to find an upgrade for a departing position coach? I would lose respect for Coach Fleck if he had instead said, we'll never be able to find position coaches as good or better than those who moved on.

I think there was praise given to them in the announcements of them leaving, as appropriate.

We need to stay with the process of working for a better best in everything we do. I would expect nothing less.
