We played at Conway in 2010 and I think it had something to do with UGA moving their game that caused Coastal to back out of the return game. That ended up causing us to grab D2 Tusculum. The AD at the time was pretty hot.
So UGA moved your game and it was Coastal's problem? You guys could have just dropped UGA and kept your game with us if playing us was such a big deal.
Other way around. UGA moved YOUR game which caused the shuffling. I think Coastal had a chance to meet its obligation but didn't want to travel to GS and UGA two weeks in a row so they picked up Catawba at home. I think the whole thing started because the Texas A&M and Missouri changed the SEC schedule for 2012.
Ah ok. We probably could have rescheduled, perhaps not that year but in another. But I do know that practice is fairly common. We've had schools buyout a return game because they had an FBS school either change the date or added or just didn't want to play us again.
Has Ga Southern never bought out a return game?

Or they simply decided to split up the 'outlier travel schools' and allow USA to go West.
USA, Texas State, NMSU, ULL, Ark State, ULM
Idaho, Coastal, Ga Southern, App, Ga State, Troy
X Division Rivals - Troy/USA, Idaho/NMSU, Ga Southern/Ark State, ULL/App, Coastal/ULM, Texas State/Ga State.

Probably not what is happening. But its not a bad result.

I guess my true beef is why we don't play either Troy at home and at USA or flip it. that way we get an Alabama game every year. Seems kinda not brilliant to me.

Does Georgia State actually do much, if any, recruiting in Alabama? Arkansas State does (and appears to have particular success in the Mobile area too). USA and Troy to the East might be bad for them too. South Alabama would probably choose ULL as a traditional rival in the West, so stAte would choose Troy as its traditional rival. But stAte would probably rather have access to Mobile rather than Troy.
I get that Georgia State sees USA as a big rival (congrats on the win btw). But for many USA fans, Georgia State simply isn't as much of a priority than the Western schools. We have zero history with Coastal, App, or Georgia Southern.
Idaho to the East makes sense for USA (assuming the university wants to stay West), stAte (who presumably wants to stay with Mobile for recruiting purposes), for ULL (who presumably also would like to stay with USA), and for ULL and Texas State (both of whom would also have both the 'far travel schools' in their division). It would not be good for Idaho (Troy being the only Central Time Zone school in their division) or the Eastern schools (all of whom would have to travel to Idaho - but the conference gave them a solid when they took Coastal).
Again, it probably won't happen. But for many of the schools it would be a much better result than USA being in a division it might not choose, having one division with much bigger travel costs, and cutting off stAte from a yearly game in a prime recruiting area for them.

You are right in one of the most important aspects of our program is playing a yearly game in Alabama. It's why we always want an Alabama team part of a conference we want to be in, and also why we'll give Auburn a guarantee at a reduced rate to ensure a regular set of games.
In a sense, it's easier for us to recruit Alabama than it is Arkansas. Not a ton of top instate prospects here, and the recruits get too much pressure to sign with the University of Arkansas whenever they inevitably come after our instate commit list with late offers to cover slots they didn't fill.

I like it for selfish reasons Idaho would play at CCU every other year.
The other five Western division teams besides NMSU would travel to Idaho less than once every four years.
The same is true for the Eastern division teams making the trip to N.M. .
The travel subsidies help but having Idaho vs NMSU as cross division rivals helps also.

Honestly, I am beginning to doubt Idaho and NMSU get much of an extension, if any.

Given the continuing level of unrest in the B12 and elsewhere in FBS and the lack of cost to the Belt in keeping us around I can't believe this conference would be dumb enough to kick teams out, but you might be right. Signs haven't been all that encouraging lately.
FWIW, I'd much rather Idaho play in the West -- we've spent more time in conferences with those schools and our fans are more familiar with them. We even go all the way back to the Big West with StAte and I like seeing that game on the schedule. But beggars can't be choosers.
