Roku 3 WatchESPN app users - Walking Dead
I would like to share some information and invite your feedback as well.

I generally watch the SunBelt games and App games I can't attend through Roku 3 on the WatchESPN app. However, about a month ago, when I chose a game to watch (live or replay), it would appear as if it was loading, then automatically switch to the Roku home screen. I had thought it may be a temporary error, but after a month of it continuing not to work and also finding out that a friend of mine was having the same problem, I researched on the web.

What I found was that an update was completed and that you had to open the ESPN app, scroll to the bottom, and "Activate Live TV". In order to do this, you have to be a current subscriber to an ESPN service. Luckily, I was able to use my Sling TV account to activate the live TV on ESPN and it began working.

However, it used to not require you to be an ESPN subcriber to watch ESPN3 events, just the ESPN channels. Had I not had Sling TV, it doesn't appear that I could watch through Roku, however, I could still watch ESPN3 through my phone or laptop. My friend who was having the same issues does not subscribe to any cable servicer or Sling TV, so he now cannot access ESPN3 on Roku, just his phone and laptop. This seems silly. Any thoughts?

RE: Roku 3 WatchESPN app users
ESPN has pushed recently to make sure anyone who watches their online edition is currently subscribed to the Cable service. They are losing subscribers in large numbers, and are trying to stem the flow wherever possible.

It is strange though because ESPN3 service should continue to be through your ISP.

That was a pesky bug they had and not the first time. Glad it was finally fixed.

Thanks for posting! I was having the same issue, and this got me to switch things up so it's working for me now, at least temporarily. I changed the account linked to the ESPN Roku app from our ISP to our Sling account, and ESPN3 seems to be working again. I thought it was the ISP that was allowing us to watch ESPN3 before, but maybe it was just that everyone with the Roku app had access to it.

I'll be interested in seeing what happens if we drop Sling soon, as we pretty much only got it for bowl season...

I got Sling for ESPN, ESPN2, and AMC (Walking Dead), as well as TNT and TBS for playoffs and NCAA tournament. The only channel I miss since cutting cable is Fox Sports South for watching the Hornets. I'm only catching them now if they happen to be on the 1 or 2 nights a month I make it out. By the way, Mohu Leaf HD antenna works great for all your local stations.

Same issue on Apple TV. I tired to stream the TXST/GS basketball game and it wanted my subscription to a cable service. It usually let me stream if the game was online only and not an some ESPN station.

I may drop the Sports Package but I will keep it since I will still watch ESPN3 for MBB season.

I usually watch the games that arent on the normal channels on the watch espn app on my pc or if I am away from the house I watch on my android phone. I have a 24" widescreen monitor for my pc so that is good enough for me. we subscribe to uverse and many sbc games were on somewhere, just had to scout around and find them.

Yeah, I have a decision to make...there's something that just seems weird about keeping Sling just for the ability to watch ESPN3 on my TV, especially if the computer access is still there. And especially since there's not much you really have to pay to watch if you have internet access, anyway.

There is no way I could watch as many games as I watched this fall without Sling TV. Love it.

You just have to go to settings and update the update. There is a patch in the update that kills the bug. It was very frustrating and near silence from roku/espn on the nationwide problem.

Now to monopolize all the bandwidth in Forsyth. That is if you can beat E22 to it.

RE: Roku 3 WatchESPN app users
Does Roku have an app for streaming music from a computer or other source?

I know this is off topic and slightly embarrassing but I have been using Zune for nearly a decade now but Win 10 no longer supports it. Technology has passed me by and, as stupid as it sounds, I have no idea how people listen to music through a stereo anymore. I suppose I could buy a bluetooth receiver but that's a lot of money! Also, I've always liked to keep my music on a separate device from my phone but that may not be possible anymore.

They have several music apps, however, I think Amazon Music may be what you would want to use. Most of my stuff is on ITunes and it doesn't support that. Think that's where Apple TV may be a plus. I just stream Pandora on the Roku usually.

RE: Roku 3 WatchESPN app users - Walking Dead
Anyone here a SlingTV and Walking Dead fan? I was unable to watch live on Sunday night and went to stream on SlingTV through Roku last night and it was not available. This has not been an issue in the past, but fear that SlingTV may not allow to replay going forward.

They have a pretty active Twitter feed. I would ask.
