RE: Larry Coker out as HC
I like Naivar but he's done quite a bit of traveling around and I feel he'd be better off settling down at one job for a bit. But I know his wife is big on the Hill Country (that's why he went from Rice to Texas State the second time around).

Levine probably will have to be a coordinator again before he gets another head coaching job.

Wow! Hickey has some set of balls!

why wait a month after season over and only a month before NSD????

Maybe their recruiting wasn't that hot anyway. Seems like they were losing assistants left and right so why not go ahead and make a change.

Coker was probably having trouble hiring assistant coaches. I doubt too many people wanted to jump on a sinking ship. This is a much better solution for UTSA.

It was time for Coker to go. Yes, he started the program, but he was still signing primarily JUCO's in what, his 5th year? That won't cut it. Coker was great at building an "it's us against the world" culture, but that stuff only works for so long. UTSA needs to take bigger steps now.

How about going after Bailiff? He knows Texas recruiting, familiar with your area, has had unprecedented success at Rice, at least according to some, and could use a change of scenery and lesser recruiting restrictions. Plus, believes in the meercat. What's not to like?

Exactly. Rice is not a football destination. No one is going to want to coachat a school it is nearly impossible to recruit at because of academics, lack of fans, etc. Bailiff pulled a miracle and won a cusa title there. Man, some fans.

I am critical of decisions Doc makes at times, but damn, i am glad to have him once all is said and done. Schools like Marshall don't get the cream of the crop and its not a destination job, and Rice is probably much lower on the desirable coaching job list.

I honestly think Rice is the most desirable coaching job left in C-USA. Our budget is one of the biggest in C-USA, we have a great location, and arguably the most name recognition in the conference. However, there are challenges that you alluded to, such as academic restrictions and the lack of fan support. Academic restrictions will always be an issue, but fan support can be changed with the right coach. Our baseball team is consistently in the top 25 with regard to attendance. People come to watch a winner, bottom line.

Umm, yes it was. He was handed a Bentley by Sumlin and put it into such disrepair that he couldn't even resell it in tact if you follow the metaphor.

Often times the team came out unprepared and it led to some of the most humiliating losses in UH history, including to the thread's namesake. Losing and even losing big is one thing but they came out looking sloppy and unprepared one too many times to too many bad teams (or teams that played bad like UCLA). Tom Herman is the antithesis of that and it shows. No more humiliating losses to Tulane, UTSA, Texas State, UCLA and SMU.

Rice has been a powerhouse in baseball for a while. I guess if you won for years consistently fan support will come. What was your actial attendance during the cusa title run? I know reported was aomewhere around 20k, but i also know that wasn't true attendance, looking for an honest assessment on that.
Its a tough game to pull fans in that market with the competition you have.

So because a team got upset in an otherwise dominant season with multiple big wins, it's a humiliating loss? First, UConn went to a bowl but second half of UH's roster was injured, including Ward.

I'd rather lose halfway across the country at UConn than lose to North Texas a few weeks after they get blasted by ~60~ by an above average FCS team.

My hunch, UTSA is a sleeping giant. In about 5 years, Road Runners could make some noise. Regarding Rice, clearly classiest academic institution in CUSA and Great location, but tough place to recruit. Watson Brown said he regretted leaving Owls to take another job, and is reported to have called Rice "best job I ever had."

Then whose fault was it then? He finished a mediocre 5-7, 8-5 and 7-5 despite the vast amount of talent we have. You don't lose to crappy teams like La Tech, UTSA, SMU, Texas State and Tulane and expect to keep a job at UH. Funny how Herman went 13-1 with the exact same players and everything.

I definitely give UTSA the best chance of emerging in the west followed by UNT....

Rice is a hit or miss.....very tough to recruit.....they're just too smart 03-wink

UTEP is like the lone island where gilligan and the skipper still reside...

That wasn't a crappy Tech team. Just a little bit of defense and that team would have been in the Orange Bowl playing Florida St (Orange Bowl reps in Ruston for Game 11). But you're right, the others you listed were crappy.

Or you could look at it another way: Levine set up the foundation for Herman to come in and succeed right away. Those were his recruits. If I'm not mistaken the 4th year was when both Briles and Sumlin had their great years at UH which resulted in them moving on to bigger gigs.

With that said Levine probably wouldn't be my first option.

I'm going to wait and see how the new staffs handle recruiting and see some on the field results before I stake out a position on which might emerge in the west.

Right now, I can say I'm impressed with Littrell's recruiting. He's getting players McCarney couldn't even dream of recruiting. We just don't know what kind of noise UTSA next regime can make on the recruiting front.

We should have hired Jinks, or still go after him. We need a coach that will put a wall around SA in regards to recruiting. We have a ton of great players in the area, they need to stay here. Then we're golden.
