No, they weren't. I live just outside Auburn, and all my in-laws down here are huge Auburn fans. There was literally no buzz in this town for this game. They were hugely disappointed with their season, and were embarrassed to play in the Birmingham Bowl. Charles Barkley even said that publicly.
All week, the players and fans had to endure insults from Bama fans who live in Birmingham and around Auburn. It wasn't b/c they had to play Memphis. They know we beat Ole Miss, and they were NOT confident they would win, at all.
It was b/c they had to play in the B'Ham Bowl (the 9th place SEC team), while Bama is playing in the CFPs. That is humiliating for them.
Auburn had a good turnout b/c Legion Field is 2 hours from their campus, and those who came were enthusiastic fans after getting there, but I sat with my family in the middle of the Auburn section, and believe me, they thought they might lose until late in the 3Q, and were just relieved to win the game.
Auburn played okay, but isn't a particularly good team. They have all 4 and 5-star recruits, and are athletic, big and deep, as you would expect for an elite SEC team. But they have no QB. All 3 who played would be average or worse in the AAC, even.
But for whatever reason, Memphis just didn't show up. We were missing 3 defensive starters and our head coach, and Paxton Lynch was just completely out of sync yesterday. Probably b/c he was thinking about his presser this morning where he declared for the draft.
