Auburn was thrilled to be even playing in a bowl game after finishing dead last in the SEC West with a 2-6 conf record.

Memphis offense just didn't show up today. Auburn defense is good- but not this good. Lynch looks like dog crap.

4 turnovers in the first half and couldn't build up a lead. That was key.

They were yesterday but Auburn's D was ranked 2nd to last in the SEC (just ahead of UK)...and 3rd worst against the pass.

Another idiotic statement from Mack Brown. Seems to have propensity for making them. Seems to have foot in mouth disease. Did he talk to any of the Auburn players or coaches and they told him, highly doubt it. The man is a first class clown. He is truly bad for CFB making those type of broadcast public statements.

What a joke, Auburn already has their excuses lined up should they lose.

Mack Brown is the epitome of BCS/P5 bias. He shows it in every comment he makes. To Mack and ppl like him no football outside of the self-described "power" leagues exists.

No team from a "p5" league could ever get up for an opponent from the "outside". Screw Mack and get the win Memphis.

To be honest I thought Memphis would handle Auburn pretty easily. They aren't moving the ball so far on offense like I thought they would. It's Auburn type of grind it out game right now. That's not good for Memphis.

Which is really funny considering he's coached at Memphis as well as USM and Tulane. Guess he forgot where he came from.

Damn. Something I can finally agree on with GreenWave16 .

Based on most GreenWave16's posts, I wouldn't have thought that he was capable of posting anything as coherent and logical as the bolded above.

No, they weren't. I live just outside Auburn, and all my in-laws down here are huge Auburn fans. There was literally no buzz in this town for this game. They were hugely disappointed with their season, and were embarrassed to play in the Birmingham Bowl. Charles Barkley even said that publicly.

All week, the players and fans had to endure insults from Bama fans who live in Birmingham and around Auburn. It wasn't b/c they had to play Memphis. They know we beat Ole Miss, and they were NOT confident they would win, at all.

It was b/c they had to play in the B'Ham Bowl (the 9th place SEC team), while Bama is playing in the CFPs. That is humiliating for them.

Auburn had a good turnout b/c Legion Field is 2 hours from their campus, and those who came were enthusiastic fans after getting there, but I sat with my family in the middle of the Auburn section, and believe me, they thought they might lose until late in the 3Q, and were just relieved to win the game.

Auburn played okay, but isn't a particularly good team. They have all 4 and 5-star recruits, and are athletic, big and deep, as you would expect for an elite SEC team. But they have no QB. All 3 who played would be average or worse in the AAC, even.

But for whatever reason, Memphis just didn't show up. We were missing 3 defensive starters and our head coach, and Paxton Lynch was just completely out of sync yesterday. Probably b/c he was thinking about his presser this morning where he declared for the draft.

Houston just had a pretty nice win. Let me know when a team from the Sunbelt wins a New Years Six bowl.

The Sun Belt isn't even a division 1 conference really.

So here it is:

1. (When behind or the game is close) "They don't care about playing a team from an inferior league."

2. (When ahead) "The better team won and Memphis just can't compete playing a weaker schedule than [insert P5 opponent]."

Sounds like your typical SEC excuses.

It's ACC too, we'll never hear the end of it by FSU fans.

Auburn had a pretty big post game celebration in the locker room on the internet with their dancing head coach. Looked liked they were pretty excited to me. Fans may not have been but the players came to play. We were obviously in a funk.

The fans at the game were excited. But gazillions who stayed home weren't, lol. The players certainly played like they were trying. Ours did, too. But I think Paxton had checked out, and was being careful, and we dropped a lot of passes, and Paxton's passes just weren't absolutely on target, like normally.

Good season, though. I'll gladly take another.

No excuses today, Houston was clearly the better team. Houston should start next season off in the top 10.

Not offering excuses, but I think they knew that they were playing a diminished football team ... "Head Coach was gone, Offensive Line Coach dismissed during preparations for recruiting misconduct, and three defensive starters not playing due to health reasons."

I'm not taking anything from Auburn, but I don't think anyone, other than hopeful fans, really thought that we would win that one ... 07-coffee3

It was Auburn with excuses, not Memphis.
