If CUSA-W loses 2 we'll need to backfill. Moving MT or WKU makes zero sense.

I like the additions of TXST and ASU or USA.

MWC>>>CUSA: TV contract (big difference), academics (big difference), lack of rivals, etc. etc.

Rice admin and fans are not happy with CUSA, I am glad we are being proactive for once and pushing to leave. I still think AAC is our first choice, but we may have been told we won't get it so we're looking west? I still take MWC and UNM, AirForce, Boise, etc. over LaTech, FIU/FAU, MTSU, etc.

If we are lucky enough to get out, I will miss Southern Miss and UAB.

From Berman, who usually gets the scoop in Houston:

Sources confirm @RiceUniversity officials have had conversations with Mountain West Conference about potential expansion. Nothing imminent.

I don't think USA would be on the menu this time around. UAB is coming back. My understanding, which might be flawed, was that USM didn't object to USA because UAB wasn't around and they wanted someone close. UAB might object to USA as well.

---

Its entirely possible CUSA, even if they lose Rice and UTEP, simply use this as an opportunity to 'right size' and hang at 12. With 2 6 team divisions, they'd get the chance to have a permanent cross division rival. So the East could be Marshall, FIU, FAU, UNCC, ODU, and WKU. And the West could be MTSU, UAB, USM, LTU, USM, UTSA, and UNT. MTSU and WKU could be permanent rivals. MTSU would lose its annual matchup with Marshall, but would regain access to Alabama, where it recruits. Or just switch it up.

---

I'd expect if CUSA decided to backfill, that they'd try to do it with 2 teams that could fit in the West. Texas State, ULL, stAte, and Georgia State would be on the menu. But all of them have potential blocks, one of them might not be interested, and the other might have issues with votes even before a block.

---

I'm concerned, but I'm starting to think that this might simply be something that might just stop with the MWC going to 14 and CUSA going to 12.

I agree.

If that happened they would be losing two of their two most recognized programs. I just cant imagine that they would not want to skim off our top two programs and further distance themselves for the rest of us.

The Mountain West already has a much more lucrative TV contract than CUSA and the gap is only going to get larger when the new contracts come out. You can bet Rice and UTEP know what's going on and they're trying to get out while they can. I don't see CUSA expanding with the playoff payout based on a 12 team conference. Those CUSA CEO's are going keep every penny they can.

Maybe we should do our own relegation system.

Merge SBC and CUSA into National Conference Premier and National Conference Champions and then promote the top team of champions and relegate the bottom team of premier every year.

You want conference realignment? Fine, lets do it every year with no entrance exit fees.

And yes, I know it is not going to happen. But it would cause a stir.

This has been mentioned before as a G5 thing. The idea being that in order to get attention down the road, the G5 is going to have to be creative. I'm just not sure being that creative is the right answer.

I would like for USM to consider talks with the MWC. Would be a good move for the Eagles IMO.

Could work out for USM if Rice and UTEP get MWC invites.

Then the AAC gets raided it would be a three team race for two spots.
NIU,USM and U Mass for two AAC spots .

Naw... it wouldn't work out. USM would be MUCH better off in the Belt IMO. Many more potential LOCAL rivalries than just the one with the UABeez.

USM has been in CUSA for over 20 years. I realize MWC would be a lot of traveling but I think it would be worth it.

I don't see you guys in the MWC, not without local games. Those trips would become expensive, especially in the Olympic Sports.

It is not going to happen. The Mountain West is interested in Texas schools. They will not go east of Houston and they can't expand without the additional revenue. In other words, they have to convince ESPN that adding two Texas markets is worth enough money so that they can at least break even on the revenue. Going to 14 without the additional revenue will not happen.

The Mountain West announced at the conclusion of its presidents' meetings the conference has no plans to expand.
