Yep. Having Beamer around could be a little bit of a problem. Also, Bud Foster coveted that job and now is told he hads to work with JF. Could be an awkward locker room.

Bud Foster knew he wasn't getting the job. JF had to sign off on keeping them so he will likely be grateful. As for JF, while he did a great job here for us, I think he botched his exit. We might never know the timing of his interviews, meetings, and negotiations, and how they interfered with his duties here, but one thing is highly likely --- it played a role in our 3 game losing streak.

We were going to lose to Navy regardless...

Now if we win against Houston I think we do show up much more enthusiastically against Temple. I can see a little distraction causing us a 1 point loss.

This. I still like the coach, but people seem to be giving him a complete pass on this, while I think it's kind of bull****. It is what it is. Next. I'd be ok if VT loses every game not against UT.

Pretty much how I feel. It definitely put some perspective on fuente's time here (with one foot out the door).

It was an awesome run and Fuente appeared to have the right stuff. But I won't be cheering for or against him at any point in the future, unless he's playing the tigers.

Me too. If they spent much time with him in extended interviews, Bud Foster, the AD, the president, it seems that it was likely evenings during the week of the Temple game, since we performed our worst all season and you could reason that it was largely due to him being distracted during that week. We had Houston beat early, so apparently we were ready for that game. Navy simply beat us and when the offense stumbled, it couldn't get back on the field enough to get in a groove.

We all strongly suspected he would get job offers if we had another good season, and getting to 8-0 and ranked 13 maybe made them come in a little earlier than expected. Well, plus the fact that there were early openings this year with Spurrier and Beamer announcing their retirements partway through the season. I took him at his word that he would wait until after the season and evaluate offers, but I understand how the pressure to get a coach named at a major program like VT could cause things to change. Still, it is pretty chickensheet to spend time interviewing for another job at such an important point to your current program.

I hope the dipstick Memphis media types don't ask the new coach how long he will stay, like they did Fuente. There are basically only 2 answers, and the most honest one can't be uttered because it will be taken negatively no matter how you phrase it, so they have to use the "as long as you'll have me" type answer.

When his contract was revised, he took a smaller increase with a smaller buyout...that was a clear sign of what would happen. Has he been to Blacksburg? Difficult to get there and is coal mining country.

Hope we can keep this success going, this was a great year.

It's been said here that he took less pay for himself so that the assistants could get more. During the SMU game, the announcers were talking about someone asking him about future offers and he had said something about making sure his assistants would be taken care of. So maybe that's one other thing the VT position has over us, there is enough money to go around.

I wonder if the VT admin didn't want to risk wholesale staff changes and the possibility of 2-10, perhaps bad records for 2 seasons as everyone gets comfortable. Maybe he'll be free to hire his own guys next year.

I think the players knew he was talking seriously even earlier. Local media suggesting that the players did NOT just find out after yesterday's game. ???
