Seahawks to Face South Carolina in NCAA Tourney

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – For the second time in program history, UNCW is heading to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship as the field of 64 teams was announced on Monday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who earned an at-large berth for the first time in school history, will face South Carolina in a first round game on Friday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on SEC Network Plus.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and children (17 and under) and can be purchased by calling 800-4SC-FANS.

UNCW, which has won a school-record 14 games this season, is one of four Colonial Athletic Association teams to earn a selection to the tournament. CAA champion James Madison earned the league's automatic qualifier while Hofstra and William & Mary also earned at-large berths. It is the first time in CAA history that four women's soccer teams have earned a spot in the tournament.

Led by 2015 CAA Coach of the Year Paul Cairney, the Seahawks will be making their second appearance in the tournament after earning the CAA's automatic qualifier in 2009. UNCW dropped a 1-0 decision against Georgia in the 2009 first round game.

Senior forward Maddie McCormick leads the CAA's leading offense into the NCAA Tournament. The Newark, Del., native is tied for the league lead with 14 goals and ranks second with 33 points. Meanwhile, senior forward Katrina Guillou is tied for fourth in the CAA with 24 points.

One of six teams from the SEC to earn a berth in the tournament, South Carolina carries a 12-4-3 record into Friday's contest against the Seahawks after battling to a 2-2 tie against Auburn in the SEC Tournament last Wednesday. The Gamecocks will be making their eighth appearance in the tournament in the last nine years.

UNCW and South Carolina have met four times in a series the Gamecocks lead by a 3-0-1 margin. South Carolina earned a 2-0 victory over UNCW in the last meeting on Aug. 23, 2013.

The winner of Friday's game will advance to the second round and play against either Howard or Virginia.
