Staples from SI discussing Tigers in Playoff
Don't normally post this type of thing but found it interesting on the way in to my office this morning. Here in Nashville we are starting to get some traction ever so slightly from media. Not much, but a little that is positive. This morning on 104.5 The Zone they had Andy Staples of SI who covers college football for SI. They discussed the game for several minutes. Staples take was that it will be a shootout, and will be very fun to watch. He mentioned that Tunsil will not play but that they will get him back next week and that "what if, Memphis wins, which Memphis can, and then win out some very tough AAC games remaining on their schedule, and Ole Miss gets Tunsil back and wins out the SEC West, then Memphis is in the Playoff". He did not say NY6 Bowl, he said "how about that, that would be crazy but would be the case, Memphis would be in the playoff".

Stranger things have happened, lots of football to play that makes this unlikely but nonetheless to have that conversation happen here in Nashville says A LOT about where the staff and admin has gotten this program. It will be a tall order but not impossible. Every year few years it seems some school comes out of nowhere so why not us this time? Would be nice and electrifying for the program, school, and the city

Just thought I'd pass along from up this way.
Go Tigers!

For that to happen, I could go to my grave a happy man (but not any time soon....)

Yes, I think that would make us all happy. Like I said, a lot would have to happen. Just found it interesting that we have come a long way in short time to hear that conversation going on.

Pretty close to impossible.

Big 12: Baylor, TCU
Big 10: Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State
SEC: Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss
Pac 12: Utah, UCLA
ACC: Clemson, Florida State

I really can't imagine a scenario where only 3 of the above teams get in and MEMPHIS is the 4th pick.
The ACC would have to really eliminate itself entirely by having 2 or 3 losses each. Even if the Pac 12 followed suit and started to beat each other up so bad, the computers would spit out 4 teams from the first 3 conferences listed.

I suppose it is mathematically possible, given that we do play a monster schedule with 4 games against top 30/35 competition left, however it would only be a small fraction of a 1% chance

For one thing, you would need to remove Ole Miss from your SEC list. If we beat them Sat., they would have 2 losses min. If we were to win out, at that point, we would be more likely than they.

Think more 4 dimensionally. Michigan already has a loss. I doubt they're making it through the season without 2. If they do it means that both Ohio State and Michigan state will end up with 2 losses thanks to big 10 championship game. Likewise, in the SEC, Bama and Ole Miss are likely to end up with 2 losses.

All these teams are going to have to play each other and one team has to lose every game

There is no way the country clubs are going to allow a non-member in their championship! Until this country becomes America again you can just forget that. Football has been a country club game in this country for at least 50 years and there will have to be a sea change before there is a real tournament to determine a national champion in football. Until then the best we can do is just beat them. I had rather do that than join them.

I am not sure there are football gods, but I am pretty sure there are football bankers.

RE: Staples from SI discussing Tigers in Playoff
All the contenders play each other.

The most difficult thing is for Memphis to win all of our games...Navy, Houston, Temple, Tulsa, MS...difficult.

If we did, Miss is out.
Michigan, Mich State OSU all play each other
LSU plays Alabama
Florida plays LSU
Florida State plays Clemson
Baylor plays TCU
Utah still tough schedule
All the above also have very tough other games

Should Memphis win them all, key would be whether a one or two loss team would be ahead out of four.
With wins over a ranked MS, ranked Houston and ranked Temple...and the above- theoretically possible.

But unrealistic.
