Herd claims second "National Defensive Player of the Week" honors this season
Marshall's Junior defensive end Gary Thompson was named Conference and National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Southern Miss, which included two sacks, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups, and three QB hurries. It's the second National Defensive Player of the Week award this year for a Herd player. Marshall safety Tiquan Lang won the award in Week 1 for his 2 pick sixes and 17 tackles in the Herd's victory over Purdue.

This is huge. The emergence of Ryan Bee and the return of Evan have been key pieces. Last year through six games, the defense had given up an average of 17.17 PPG. This year through six games we are giving up an average of 17.5.

Pretty good for a young D

pretty good considering Herd fans whined all summer about what it would cost losing Holmes, Hewitt, Blackmon, Swag Roberts and J Rouse. But recruiting negated the losses. Same deal for next yr with Hunter and McElvey leaving. We have about 5 playing every game not counting the youngsters. Hancock the WO from Beckley or Parkersburgh chased Mullens down from behind for a loss late in the 4th. Now we got to get the O going....plenty of room for imp there.

I really like our defense. Up until last year I couldn't say that. Chuck Heater come in 2013 and started to turn the defense around but it really didn't show until last year.

We didn't have the players we have now but we had enough talent on defense to not give up 42 points per game like Rippon did, The 1st 2 years of Doc when Rippon was there we should have had a defense that held most to 25-28 points.

And to answer your question. Rippon is the DC of Colombia where the last 2 years they have given up 49.5 and 52.5 points per game the last 2 years and went 0-20.
