It is a rivalry to me, always has been always will be. It defined football season's start for 30 years in the mid south as far as I was concerned. When we get into the Big 12 they will still be our rival.

Actually, if we ever get to the BigXII, I'm thinking the rivalry with Ole Miss if we still played them would be even bigger, particularly with their fans.

It astonishes me, always has, that a school that will admit functioning illiterates, is the joke of their own conference, hasn't won a championship in football since we put a man in the moon has bumbling audacity to consider themselves superior to anyone. Ole miss is a punch line everywhere but memphis and Mississippi.

No one will really be surprised at if we win or lose.

Actually a good summation.

But- and they can claim this- they have been stronger than a Memphis, with no strong conference affiliation and the other obstacles.

Remember when the functioning illiterate puffed his chest about never losing to Memphis?

“We just got to take it as the next victim,” Elston shared. “We just got to go out and do our job. I think they (Memphis) will be pumped up. Everyone has been talking about them chanting, ‘We want Ole Miss.’ It’s said to be a rivalry game, but I really don’t look at it like that. I just look at it like another victim.”

Kickoff between Ole Miss and Memphis is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT and will be televised on ABC.

A few comments...
1. The only time I've heard the 'we want Ole Miss' comment was from local radio person. I cringed when I heard it. Not because some students said something at a game but rather because local radio would even take the time to talk about what a few students said. Just a peeve I have with locals that end up making a tough job winning harder. Yes, I believe it matters a) the OM player referenced it b) I think it helps in game prep and focus. Just a poor job by the media.
2. Is it a rivalry. Yes, but perhaps not to the degree of other rivalries. I don't think OM cares to much about us which is fine because the record is overwhelming in their favor (I get that). I do think it is still a rivalry on a smaller scale due to the # of times we have played, proximity, and the # of players on each team from the area, etc. My feeling is that team with non winning records against another team tend to treat the game bigger (understandable). For instance, I'm sure OM sees the Alabama game as bigger than Ala sees the game.

Oh. Every league game is more important to me than this game. This is a nice to have especially when they are ranked but ultimately the league games matter more.

Here's another point of view on the lack of rivalry, from Ole Miss fans.

And here is the link for the Fresno State "Hate Week" post from the same website. Guess that makes them a rival too...

Oh, heck, Grasshoppers,

Ole Miss has been "Memphis'" rivals since 1901 when they played the first of 4 games against Memphis University School. they also played Central High School, Southwestern (Rhodes College), CBU (High School), the Memphis Medical School, and the UT Doctors in the early days. (As an interesting aside, they also played Havana University, Havana, Cuba, who beat them.)

They were huge rivals all during the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. I grew up on the passion of this rivalry, and heard all the tales from my father of games extending back to the 1920's. I guarantee you they still really hate us with a condescending kind of hate. Just visit Oxford and you will hear it out of their own mouths.

The world did not begin in 1990.

Far too many of them still embrace some really bad aspects of their past.

At least some of them have progressed.

Give me Memphis...baby. With pride. No tail tucking here....regardless of what happens in a football game, which I expect our kids to win anyway.

All things are relative. LSU and State are bigger rivals to them. They treat us the same way Bams treats them. It is a much bigger rivalry in West TN and North MS than many of their fans want to admit.

The Houston and Navy Games are more important than this game...

But if we are only going to lose one game I would choose for that game to be Temple.

Lose to Temple and we still get to that league championship and get the access slot. Lose to Ole Miss and go undefeated in the league and Boise may beat us out.

yes we will. Maybe not in ours, but probably in our kid's and generations beyond.

It's a one-sided rivalry which really has no basis in modern time. Maybe before, but not anymore.

My sister is currently at Ole Miss and would disagree with you... It certainly was not "one-sided" when we played them in the NIT a few years back...

Which one of her bridesmaid's dresses will she be wearing this weekend?

Freeze is pleased to see the rivalry with Memphis renewed since the campuses are less than 90 miles apart.

"Every game from this point on on our schedule, our fan base is excited," Freeze said. "They live and die by our football program. Every week is a roller coaster, so to speak. From play to play, from game to game, that explains that their fans and our fans have, and the passion around college football. It means a lot.

"They work together. They live together. A lot of friends on both sides, I'm sure. It would give us bragging rights for the next 365 days or so until we play again. It means a lot to both fan bases, and I have a clear understanding of that."

Boom goes the dynamite.
