I left before halftime...got home, didn't listen to the game, turned off the phone and went to bed....woke up to this nice and happy news! Now...need someone in the AD spot that can hire and find someone who wants to coach and develop players...not a dude at the end of his coaching life. ..

And the effing buyout due to the stupid extension could be as much as 3 million...

What kind of contract buyout is there for your AD???

According to gmg.com, he has 16 months left on his contract, so about 500k...

Really not sure why they just didn't have the president take the post game conference over once RV announced mac was relived of his duties and say the same thing about RV...oh well....gotta love north texas...

Yes, our AD has to go because of bad coaching hires and the horrible contract extension. However, he has also been instrumental in dramatically upgrading the facilities, bringing the new stadium on board and the move to CUSA. The latter is probably the reason RV is still around. It will be interesting to see if he is around to hire the next FB coach. He doesn't seem to have much support though.

The facilities should have been built years ago when we had the chance, albeit small, to move to CUSA. That's when they took UTEP and someone else. RV couldn't get the stadium done back then.

He has to go. If not, and he's remotely involved in hiring our next FB coach, UNT is screwed again.

This is true. The only recruit I can remember picking UNT over UTSA is that WR from Carthage. OTOH, there's probably 20-30 guys UTSA has picked up over the years that also had UNT offers.

I hope you guys can get rid of that mediocre AD as well.

From the looks of both team's records, you may be fighting over the wrong guys.

RE: Dan McCarney fired
To address a few different points:

He did not quit during the 1st quarter, maybe mentally, but not in reality.

After the coach had addressed his team during the post game, but before all the players had finished dressing and leaving, an assistant AD and SID came into the locker room and let him know the AD wanted to see him, at which point he was told he was being let go.

The coach received a 3 year extension after winning the bowl game. He had 2 years remaining at the time(expiring after 2015 season), which gave him 5 total at the time. UNT is essentially having to buy out the extension.

In case there is any confusion, the AD in completely inept.

First round of additions were in 2005 with Marshall, UCF, Rice, and UTEP if I'm not mistaken.

Go after the SHSU coach. I don't know his name, but he has obviously done a tremendous job.

That was Goree. He was going to go to UTSA until he got his girlfriend pregnant. UNT is closer to home.

I'm not going back to read all 6 pages so maybe this has been addressed already

I know he got a extension year before last but surely UNT put what is usually very common in a coaches contract...

a 1 year buyout clause usually lower (25-50%) than the actual 1 year salary ?

Of course not silly...almost 3 million to buy out...shiatt, he even gets the car stipend and radio stipend for the entire contract...our ad is an idiot...

Yes he is...

I've never read a Western contract...basketball or football that had buy out clause over 1 year no matter how many years are left.

At Western our coaches are always working with 4 years left because on the first of July a rollover year goes into their contract...unless they failed to meet the goals in the original contract. But really it means very little because the buyout if for 1 year and with that usually less than what the coach is making for that year....it's base on what the school pays and not incentives from radio, shoes, those types of things that goes into a contact.

No matter what the cost...it had to be done and UNT will be much better for it, maybe even next year

I don't have all the exact dates handy, but I know that the announcement of UTEP joining was on April 30, 2004, and they were the last piece of the puzzle. I think it came down to them or UNT. Basically, all of the other additions (Rice, Marshall, UCF, etc.) came in Nov/Dec 2003 after the Louisville/Cincinnati/etc. situation. Then the opening for UTEP came in January when TCU announced it was leaving. The Frogs' move was totally separate from the Big East defections.

Sure Dodge could have lost to Portland State too. Probably not this bad, but he was a bad coach.

Well said.
