RE: School Reputation
Troy University was founded as an Online school in 1887. The school has grown steadily and now even boasts a brand new brick-and-mortar campus.

j/k - lots of growth at Troy - new buildings/dorms/facilities/programs, etc. + moving up to 1A really helped perception-wise. Troy is now a real option for many kids in the region, AL, FL penhandle, etc.

The academic reality of today's GS is about a decade + behind. Just about all of my friends would not have gotten in today from just 2000. Pres Grube was absolutely horrible for athletics but probably raised the bar for academics higher than any other in his tenure outside of becoming a University in 1992.

I know for the central Georgia area, like Dublin/Warner Robins, GS is really the main option. Unless you have a perfect GPA, those are the kids that have waited their whole life for UGA

RE: School Reputation
I remember people at the time thinking it was a bit weird that I got accepted into UNC-CH but went to App instead.

I can't speak for NC now as I've lived in VA since 2002 but App always seem to me to be perceived as the school for kids who couldn't get into UNC-CH but could go anywhere else and liked the mountains or did not want to major in a technical field (NC State). Meaning it was (I think rightly) thought as the 3rd best school in the UNC system behind UNC-CH and NCSU.

During my brief stint as a high school teacher outside Charlotte, NC (1998-2002) it seemed all the kids wanted to go to either App if they were the mountain/skiing/outdoorsy type or UNCW if they beach bums. Interestingly, the exact same dynamic (App or UNCW) was in place when I taught in VA (2002-2005) if they were one or the other and wanted to also go out of state.

Because growth of campus and student body doesn't have anything to do with how other people view your school?

A party school that is rapidly growing.

Even though we are getting better academically, the past and location are always forcing us to be seen as a party school. I'm Schmacked didn't help.

Maybe Georgia Southern is for students who fail at reading comprehension?

RE: School Reputation
I have to agree with most things that have been said about App. My parents grew up in Europe so as a child i knew litterally nothing about colleges (Duke, Carolina...I don't give a damn) I was a student at App from 09-13 and I have seen a lot of change in perception from then till now.

As a blossoming 'herbal enthusiast' during my junior and senior years of HS I definitely heard a lot about App's reputation in that regard. I excelled at my AP courses and could have gone to almost any public school that I wanted to, so I did catch a little flack when I chose App as the only school that I applied to.

All comments were directly related to perception and or how it is changing from when each poster attended. Sorry you are in a minimal growth opportunity school with so many more schools in the state ahead of you.

So far I think I now understand CCU's invite just one more party school made up of kids who couldn't get into their states flagship university

Next year, we will have a brand new multi million dollar ROTC building to replace the stupid tan trailer I had to put up with all 4 years. Also, the amount of growth in Statesboro alone has led me to believe that there are big things in store for GS in the future. The stigma of us being a school that is for rejects of UGA is long gone. I think we have the best ROTC program in the southeast, and would argue that it is even better than our states senior military college (North Georgia).
As some one whose been to both, I can argue contrary to the that last point, and on anything other than that I agree with you. I certainly understand your bias because it is your alma matter, but GS ain't UNG and vice versa !

NMSU is considered the party school. Mainly because of our location to Juarez. Also we know how to have a good time, where as the other D1 school produces up tight sheep.
