Sun Belt Out of Conference: Current Members since 2013
We've had a lot of changes in our league recently and I was curious how we were doing in out of conference FBS wins since those changes. For this thread I wanted to define the regular season out of conference FBS wins for teams currently in the Sun Belt while a Sun Belt member.

4 - South Alabama (SDSU 2015, Kent State 2014, Tulane 2013, Kent State 2013)
3 - Texas State (Tulsa 2014, USM 2013, Wyoming 2013)
2 - Appalachian State (Old Dominion 2015, Wyoming 2015)
2 - Louisiana Monroe (Wake Forest 2014, Wake Forest 2013)
1 - Arkansas State (Utah State 2014)
1 - Georgia Southern (Western Michigan 2015)
1 - Louisiana Lafayette (Akron 2013)
1 - Troy (UAB 2013)
0 - Georgia State
0 - Idaho
0 - NMSU

Please note that OOC games are not yet complete for this year. Georgia Southern has Georgia, Idaho has Auburn, and Louisiana Monroe has Tulsa.

Since I'm doing regular season while only a member, I felt I would recognize the bowl wins and wins for teams not yet in the conference for the same period.
2 - Louisiana Lafayette (Tulane 2013, Nevada 2014)
1 - Georgia Southern (Florida 2013)
1 - Idaho (Temple 2013)
1 - Arkansas State (Ball State 2013)

We've GOT to win more games to gain respect as a league. I must say I'm a little surprised at the numbers.

Please let me know if I've missed anything.

So this is confusing?

Why not include ULM's victory over Bama in 2007? Where are all of ULL's wins? Or the bowl victories where we beat out of conference foes?

Am I missing something. Yes the SBC is bad, but we've had our fair share of giant killers.

Yeah. Since 2013. My point in that year is that's when MTSU, FAU, UNT, and FIU were in CUSA and when GSU and TXST joined. WKU left in 2014. App State, GS, NMSU, and Idaho joined in 2014. The teams that left represented some of our previous OOC wins. If we want to improve we have to do it out of conference. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Not sure you need to throw away current members pre-2013 OOC wins just because FAU left.

The point remains, at any given time we should be able to pull the last three years of OOC data and see that the top half members have won a minimum of three OOC FBS games.

Thanks for pulling that data together.

In 2012 the SBC had UNT, WKU, MTSU, FAU, and FIU. We did not have GSU, GS, App State, Texas State, NMSU, or Idaho. USA was in its transitional year. I respect wins precious to 2013, but the conference was drastically different.

I think going back to 2010 might be acceptable, but the end result is not enough OOC regular season wins. Although I do like any stat that shows South being the best. The biggest stat is the lack of P5 wins, and I know Wake is a P5 school, but c'mon, they are in it name only, like Vandy.

Was it 2012 when ULM beat ArKansas??? Can't believe it has been that long.

Not sure if it counts, but astate beat Idaho in a ooc game in 2013 that was agreed to before the vandals joined the sbc.

It also might be worth looking at the ooc losses since that time. There are a lot of p5 losses in there that are hardly surprising

P5 wins against down SEC teams are great. But to really get somewhere you need to beat Utah State, Boise, Toledo, Northern Illinois, Houston, Rice, Southern Miss, Colorado State, etc. on a regular basis. If your conference beats the better G5 teams when they meet head to head regularly, your perception will follow.

You would have to also have to list of the losses to give it context. For instance a win over Kent St when another team played Alabama is not an apples to oranges comparison.

This was TXSTs first year as a FBS team to not win a FBS OOC game. Beat Houston in 2012 (lost to Texas Tech and Wyoming).

It was...yet that has no effect on a ULL or A-State or ULM OOC game from that time.

Also, to compare the same way:

OOC FBS wins since 2013
7 - WKU (2015- Vandy, Miami OH, 2014 - Bowling Green, Navy, Army, 2013 - Kentucky, Navy)
3 - UNT (2014 - SMU, 2013 - Idaho, Ball State)
2 - FAU (2014 - Tulsa, 2013 - South Florida)
1 - MTSU ( 2013 - Memphis)
1 - FIU (2015 - Central Florida)

All I'm saying is we have to win more OOC games. If you're playing Alabama and Georgia and LSU every year, maybe your AD should rethink scheduling. Wins or money games? Limit money games to one per season? Something has to give.

Fair point, but it is also a fair point that all SBC members should be striving for OOC games that allow for a minimum of one FBS OOC win per year.

If we continue operating the same as ever and expect different results, well you know.

Even then, you don't control how good a team is when you play them. Mizzou was coming off a 4-8 season and Toledo was an above average G5 when they were scheduled several years ago
