Lost to Minnesota by three, lost to Illinois by a bunch, but I think the offense had an ungodly amount of turnovers, beat Delaware state (whoopdidoo), and Miami (OH)

To be fair, you guys have played the tougher schedule... But Kent was more like a Big 10 D line and linebacking corps... Most were seniors that had played together for four years. They were very similar to Purdue.

If you guys punt against us 12-13 times, we'll win by 5 tds.

You D isn't near what Kents is so we won't.

Please give some credence to your claim.....

okay, do NOT take this as smack... I am just answering your request:

Total defense: Kent State #11
USM #113
Marshall #60

Total D is just based on number of yards your defense gives up. Scoring defense is probably more relevant. Kent St. was listed #6 in total D, but like #72 in scoring D. Southern Miss is #103 in total D, but 87 in scoring D. Not great, but it shows that we give up a lot of yards, but the number of points doesn't equal the number of yards. We actually have a Top 25 Red Zone D.

I love people quoting numbers.....like all that stupid shite matters....

we got a qb with a head on his shoulders and the tools that accompany that....

you guys have a D...

I take the O everytime in college ball at this level...especially getting points.....I don't even think about any of the other stuff...

here's what I know....

I've made over 1300 on southern this year ATS...said I was going to bet them every game this year.....no reason to let off the throttle now...

I got us +5.5 at 220/200

that should put the money line (when it comes out) at +210

that one's gonna be yummy too....

the weather is the one monkey wrench (no pun intended) that could muck the works....

once again, friday can't get here soon enough......

edit: it's +185 gonna lay 100/185..... check the bettors thread if you don't believe what I'm playing....I put my money up....

In the end, though, numbers are relevant... And I feel the opposite stink.... I believe that defense wins championships.... I don't believe...and correct me if I'm wrong,,, that any cuss champ in the past was bottom third in defense

I was surprised just how good Kent's defense was, solid on all three levels. You can look at scoring defense, but that can be misleading also. We scored 36 points against them, but 14 were in overtime when they were gassed and another 7 were off a KO return for a TD. So they really only gave up 15 to our offense in regulation.

They gave up 52 to Illinois, but Illinois had 5 TD "drives" of 38 yards or less. One was 11 yards. They also got a FG off a 4 yard "drive". Kent had 4 turnovers deep in their own territory. They haven't given up more than 14 points to anyone else.

Numbers do mean something as long as you're sensible and combine the numbers with the "eye test" that you see every week.

Reading the advanced stats and a few other key stats let me find out a lot about Marshall in probably 8 mins.

Do any of you know if there will be a streaming option for this game? I will have to be at a high school football game and am hoping to watch the game on my iPhone. If all else fails, I will simply listen to Marshall's radio broadcast while there.

Concerned a bit about our rush defense, I imagine Marshall will attempt to exploit it.

Should be a good game though. Southern Miss is improved.

At the same time, Marshall is certainly a better team than Texas State or North Texas.

Not sure what you mean by "this type of game"? Do you mean "tough game"? Been there...vs MSU at home...put up over 400 yards of offense (threw for over 300).....tough game on the road, you say? Been there....@ Nebraska...put up 458 yards of offense, threw for 447!

...our guys are freakin' hungry. Got a lot of defensive guys back this week who were a little banged up and didn't play vs. North Texas and of course, our offense is going to put up 400+ yards.

Again...this will be a close game until the end of 3rd/beginning of 4th...and either Mullens or Richard or Dylan Bradley/D'Nerious Antoine will make the game changing play and we'll start to pull away. Bank on that.

I stand by my prediction:

USM 38
Marshall 27

"3. Protect Mullens: The Southern Miss offensive line has shown significant progress over the last two weeks in keeping quarterback Nick Mullens upright. On Saturday, USM probably faces the best defense it's seen since the opener against Mississippi State. The Marshall defense is an opportunistic group that has eight interceptions this season compared to just three by USM."

...nope. Marshall's defense is fair, but it's not close to the Nebraska and MSU's defense. And by the way...it's FRIDAY not SATURDAY, c'mon man!

Very solid special teams.
Limited at QB.
Solid defense that hasn't been tested to the point USM will test them.
They have a -2 TO margin for the season.
