But I still think Southern Miss is back and a legit contender for the West. We've just gotten all the breaks and big plays at home tonight.

What I've seen is just awful offense out of USM

Blitzing off the corners and you go deep instead of checking off a WR screen
3rd and 2 and USM goes deep

I really don't know if its defense or just a awful offense...especially play calling

High school OC who was Mullens' high school coach and will never play anyone else.

I was one of the doubters. Apparently Marshall still knows how to win games against fairly challenging opponents.

Great play by Marshall (especially on D), horrible play calling by our OC, Mullens was playing well early but isn't now and they've left him in long enough to destroy his confidence. Did anyone else notice the HUGE momentum shift when the FG got blocked? It was like the 2012 and 2013 teams that welted the first time things went against them

We should still win 7 games and Marshall will contend with WKU and MTSU in the East.

Not every QB is going to throw or look 15+ yards down the field on almost every play...

when the defense is clearly giving up the short catch and run. USM went away from this after they started making mistakes. USM was moving the ball other than mistakes on the first 3 or 4 drives... with the short game. Then they went completely away from it.

Like I said don't know if it was just good defense or awful play calling and offense. Who throws long on 3rd and 2 when the middle of the field is open or when your rb is getting 5+ yards. From those late 2qt mistakes it went downhill fast. Probably some of both

This is the most complete game I believe Marshall has played. The defense was crazy tonight. Stopped them on 3rd and fourth down consistently. Holding in the redzone has been key.

We are still something like 1 of 10 on this down conversions. We still need more offensive consistency (and to get healthy on offense).

We have a Top 25/championship-caliber quality defense.

Well played game, Southern Miss. If you hadn't been forced (I think) to go away from the run in the second half, it would have been a test in the end.

For the Herd, best defensive play of the year, and Litton looked a little more poised, but still only finished 11-21, I think. But still no real third down efficiency. Running game (other than Johnson's tear in the 2nd quarter) was so-so. Offensive line play was not great. Samuel was a beast tonite, but defense had several stars of the game. Solid special team play. Turning point was the blocked kick, which took a swing from a 13-10 USM lead to a 17-10 half time lead for the Herd following the drive after the blocked kick. All in all a better effort for the Herd, but we still have a ways to go.
