I agree with the consensus on Rice. They don't add anything to the conference. Great academic school... and I guess baseball, but not worth it.

BUT...

Our fan base DOES show up to games. We pack our stadium with 5 or 6 times our student population every game. The problem is that we don't have a large enough fan base.

But damn it, those of us that are show up!

Where I continue to believe we can significantly improve the conference with little cost is basketball. I really wish we would add 3 non-football programs to drastically increase our quality depth in basketball. Add Wichita, VCU, and one other quality basketball program (here is where adding the Olympic program for a state flagship like UMass could be interesting). At the very least, why not add Wichita to create a balanced 12-12 model for football and basketball? Costs very little and raises the quality and value of our basketball package.
You want the B-East all over again, football schools and nonfootball schools in total disagreement. Leave the conference alone it's fine the way it is.

And if we lose Cinci and Memphis to the Big-12 or UConn to a P5---then how's that basketball look? We can repeat the same mistake we made in 2012. In 2012 we were strong and could have taken any MW school we wanted. Instead we waited on BYU. Then when we were pounded by the loses of Notre Dame, Louisville, and the C-7----that position of strength was undermined and we lost the ability to poach attractive schools. Hell, we couldn't even hold onto the MW schools we had. Sadly, it appears we learned nothing from the episode.

You can either make additions during times of strength---or you can wait and make reactive additions while under duress. One method fosters a strong, well planned, well built conference. The other is how the AAC ended up with a school that starts with a "T" that everyone likes to berate.

Probably because it's never happened before, with the exception of affiliate members (temple football from the Big East, UMass football from the MAC, etc)

As a fan of one of the private schools in this conference, we don't need another - certainly not one as small as Rice either. Why does this keep coming up?

I'm down with Toledo if they serve Tony Packo's at the Glass Bowl.

True that, but it (to be fair my other post did say I like to add BYU a private school) got me to thinking to make this post. It's a high academic achievement school, huge, endowment top world university etc. with that said poor athletic profile but has the money to improve the situation if they wanted to. That's why I propose in my OP to secure an invite they must meet certain prerequisites to secure an invite, improve FB & BB venues attain 20k season tickets, have a average attendance of 30k or more for 3 years. If Rice can add some cattle with the hat like a Stanford they would be a great addition to the AAC. We could have the AAC potential equivalent, UH/Rice like the PAC Has with UCLA/USC rivalry. Posters your not addressing my post, I said if they show if they can be a Stanford by achieving certain parameters. I believe posters are acting emotionally to the school in question and not logically to the question proposed. So let me put it another way, so everyone would be against accepting a Stanford type redux school to the AAC?

Some small part of me would like that but if it hasn't developed in 40 games it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Pretty much what we have been trying to tell Tulsa fan (who we will play for the 40th time Saturday) if it hasn't happened by now its not going to happen.

I like Rice, but they are where they belong in cUSA. Perfect cUSA school, and that's not a dig. Based on size, fan support, etc. Well suited for cUSA. We are larger universities, mostly public, investing heavily in Football.

Without being raided: 13 and 14 are BYU and Army only.

If raided, all bets are off... replacement members depends on who goes...

RE: Should the American Invite Rice? If they promise
LaTech/USM are regional universities not national In scope. Presidents and Chancellors want to associate with like kind universities. If getting invited to a higher conference was just about football Boise be in the PAC and we all know that's not happening. Have to think like university President/Chancellor and like a major conference commissioner to get the Presidents to accept Viable candidates, that tv partners will pay extra dollars for. Not saying Rice is that program now, but they have some potential, due to the resources at their disposal. I agree BYU, Boise yes Boise we are not PAC we are AAC, Air Force, Army, CSU be my picks right now. Rice and maybe UMass if they get their acts together
