Unless we add 2 more football members we will have to keep 12 teams to cover our 5 - 6 bowls starting next year. I personally think that will allow NMSU & Idaho to stay around for the foreseeable future.

they would be a good fit for the mwc but there is no room for them there. maybe the wac will take in a few football schools and nmsu and Idaho can move their football there.

I would not entirely buy in to the concept that the MW is full. Boise State wants to be in the Western Division with the California schools, not the Mountain Division. Going to 14 cuts down on the number of times Hawaii has to play the Mountain Division schools as well.

Western Division:
San Diego State
San Jose State
Fresno State
Nevada
UNLV
Boise State

Mountain Division
Idaho
Utah State
Wyoming
Colorado State
Air Force
New Mexico
New Mexico State

I just don't know if the math works out to justify it. Each school loses 1/7 of the CFP revenue, and 2/13 of the March Madness revenue, but there may be opportunities for savings by bundling the Idaho/Boise State trips and the New Mexico/New Mexico State trips.

Another idea, i wonder if the mwc would consider adding nmsu and utep to get to 14 and push boise into the west. Losing 1/7 of the playoff revenue would sting but as you said perhaps savings on travel could offset

I would think if a full MWC membership offer was an option for NMSU they'd have already jumped ship. I may be wrong. I frequently am.

UTEP isn't coming without 2-3 of their in-state amigos.

I dont think utep and their fans and supporters feel that close to any of the other texas schools. they are so far out there that I think they identify with the mountain schools more.

Yeah that's why they only brought 5,000+ fans to SMU games

Well, if you lived in El Paso, you'd probably look hard for reasons to get the hell out from time to time . .. . Even if it was only to visit SMU . . . . . .

Possibly, but the old SWC schools that UTEP wanted to associate with are down to 1

They may not feel a closeness with UNT or UTSA but I read somewhere that they would rather play in CUSA over the MWC because their it provides them an opportunity to recruit and play in front of their alumni bases in the Texas Magnet Cities (Houston / DFW / Austin / San Antonio).

El Paso is out there and they will lose recruiting battles to schools like Texas State, UTSA, UNT because kids may not want to be that far from home. I think TCU made the MW work because they were located in a major city in the eastern half of the state. Being in the eastern half of the state keeps you relevant in DFW/SA/Houston, and I think schools in those markets could make it work. I don't know if they same can be said for UTEP if they decided to cut ties and focus on western only travel

Guarantee you NMSU would jump for an all sports invite to the MWC. Heck, NMSU would jump for an olympic-only invite as well.

As for UTEP, they, like NMSU, have a lot of alums living in Houston, SA and DFW. So, along with the Texas recruiting connection the athletic dept probably wants to stay plugged into that avenue of support that CUSA offers.

I think however, for those living in El Paso, most more strongly connect with the MWC. Possibly that is different for younger alums and fans, but the older ones (like me 04-cheers ) still fondly remember the rivalries with the old WAC schools.
