Mlive Question. If true...what a disgrace!
Just read the Gazette's Mlive article with PJ's comments. Of course, it's basically just a reprint of PJ's postgame radio interview. No player quotes, injury updates or game notes. Are you telling me this piece of crap rag can't even send a reporter to the drivable game site to cover an in-state D1 team playing the freaking #1 team in the country! Total disgrace. This deserves an e-mail to Mlive. E-mail address anyone?

I believe the editor is Mickey Ciokajlo that makes these decisions.
Heck they refused to send DD to EMU and CMU for important basketball games last year. And that's only a couple hours drive.
They make DDs job harder than it should be by making him watch games or listen to the radio and then try to write stories that capture what really happened.

Wouldn't he just make the drive in our recruiting radius and get reimbursed for mileage?

Journalism at the local level was crucified by the non-paper internet revolution. Very sad to think of the days where there was an actual staff to report on games. You can send this "editor" an e-mail and still expect a bunch of PJ stories or polls on the "cutest mascot or loudest student section". They make no effort, save resources at all cost, and get clicks from those starving for ANYTHING, that stories that can be put out there with a guy at home on his computer, is the new norm. I see so many story ideas out there..and we get nothing. To not drive to this game...JOKE. With all due respect, unless the editor ordered the reporter to stay home...if he could have gotten gas money..that is a trip you have to take.

Easy for you to say. I want you to donate your free time outside of work and spend your own money after work, all out of the goodness of your heart and solely for the benefit of your employer.
Screw you.

When you're a salaried employee working from home it is hard to define your schedule. We've all done work at home that technically is not on the clock. It's the way of the world and if you want to get ahead you have to play that game or the person that is playing it will pass you by.

If you're going to publicly judge Drew's ability to move up and manage his career, I think we should be able to honestly discuss the fruits of your lawsuit against you, the details and how you handled it.
Sound good?

There's a big difference between getting up early for work or perhaps staying an hour later to finish a project and telling someone to take 12 hours of his free time outside of work to...work...all on his own dime.
You are truly a world-class loser.

Well, let's be fair here. Really, it'd be paying him $x/mile for travel out there + ticket/press access. Probably longer than 12 hours (9 hours of driving there and back), as you'd want to pull Q&A and such. But is that what one Wouldn't want to do? I can understand not wanting to drive to Akron to do that -- but to OSU? Part of it would be something you'd like, even if you're just getting your costs covered VS staying in & watching it on TV, and writing report(s).
Would there be a huge difference in going VS remotely observing? Yes and No. Like TV announcers during a football game -- do they Need to be at the game? Nope. Anyone who does Q&A post-game, Yes. I wouldn't expect mLive to tell DD to fork over his own money to drive down to Ohio to cover a game and be there for 5 hours total + 9 hours driving both ways + cost of entrance. I could easily see a reporter 1 game a season doing that on his own dime instead of doing the report(s) via home watching on TV, sure. Much like a fan geeked to make said trip, doing some Q&A, etc. But obviously the exception, as it'd be for personal pleasure to add to his job which would be purely up to him, which wouldn't be expected to happen often At All.

Charm, journalism is dying. The people in it are trying to hold on to their jobs. There are plenty of new and unemployed journalists who would love the paycheck.
You go the extra mile to stay employed. Whether it's fair or not is irrelevant. It's a matter of survival.

Hopefully those "journalists" you refer to did much more for the credibility of something more important than WMU football. You seem like a huge douche.

For thinking there is no excuse not to cover the hometown team when they are playing the number one ranked team in the nation, within driving distance? OK

Regardless of whether or not he should have gone, it really goes to show the lack of understanding on MLive's part NOT to send the person responsible for the WMU beat on the road when the home team is playing at OHIO STATE, #1 team in the nation, defending national champions, etc. The worst part is that the venue is within driving distance, and kick-off was at 3:30 so they wouldn't have even necessarily had to pay for a hotel room.

Kzoo to Columbus isn't a day trip, that's a 16 hour day.

Wrong. Mlive may be a news organization in decline, but at least it's not telling its WMU reporter to work the OSU game on his own time and money.
But of course, CD/CD1/CD2 believes Drew should be forking over his own time and money because "journalism is dying." I respect Drew for standing up for his principles.
How much did you pay out in your settlement, anyway?

I'm sure there was some sort of gag order so the people involved are not at liberty to discuss, quit asking.
