Yep, 1-4 with a home loss to CMU = 03-puke

Gotta be balls-out and get that W.

RE: WMU/OSU immediate reaction
A few random, belated thoughts following the OSU game:

- I was most impressed with our ability to run the ball throughout the game. Franklin, at times, looked like the Franklin of old, and Bogan had a breakout game. Most importantly, outside of a handful of untimely penalties, the O-line demonstrated that we have the ability to run the ball effectively, which was a big concern to me following the Georgia Southern game (if I'm an opposing MAC defensive coordinator, I'm focusing heavily on what GSU, a team with comparable talent and athleticism, did to effectively slow us down).

- Terrell had a pretty good game with the exception of the intercepted screen pass. The play was there; the pass was just a poor one. Unfortunately, that play probably sealed our fate.

- Braverman had a very good receiving game, but the decision to not fair catch the punt really hurt us (see: description of the play above).

- I thought that Davis dropped a couple of balls that, as an (alleged) NFL prospect, he needs to catch. The announcers got on Terrell for poor throws in a couple of instances, but in at least two cases I can think of, while the ball may have been a little behind him, it was still on Davis' hands. Those are catches he needs to make if he is as good as many (including most of us) think he is.

- I'll try not to beat the kicking issue to death once again here, but I called for kicker regime change after the Georgia Southern game and some responded it was not our main problem. It still probably isn't, but it's an awfully big one. There has to be someone else who can kick. Give Mitchell a shot. He literally can't do any worse.

- If kicking still isn't the biggest concern, the issue that still concerns me the most is our run defense. I don't think we were terrible defending the run yesterday, but I also think OSU probably could have run the ball at will at times had they chosen to go that route. This is one area where the past two games probably don't give us much indication of whether or not we've shown real improvement in our ability to defend the run. We should have a better idea after the CMU and Ohio games.

- Other than a couple of questionable decisions to bring the ball out of the end zone on kick returns at GSU (nitpicking), Phillips has been outstanding through the first four games. He has a kickoff return for TD against MSU (and nearly a second one), an INT returned for a TD against Murray State, and two INTs against OSU. That's one heck of a stat line.

- Arguably the most important thing at this point is that we've made it through the nonconference schedule relatively injury-free (at least regarding injuries of the major, season-ending types) and with a bye week to heal up before MAC play begins.

Agree about the kicking and the urgency there. Thus far, all those missed FGs and XPs would've done was make the loss margins more narrow. But time will come in the MAC where 1, 2, 3 points will decide a game (I.e., Toledo 2014).

Also relieved that our injury situation came out relatively good.

Offensive and Defensive lines did a respectable job; I was very impressed. I never would have imagined our running game would have done so well against Ohio State. We've got some very talented skill position players and it's been evident against two of the top teams in the country. Some unfortunate/yet typical mistakes that we make in the big games against ranked teams kept us from keeping it real close. I hope we continue to improve, because I believe we've got the pieces in place to compete for the MAC title. A new season begins in two weeks, so to speak, and I'm really looking forward to it.

We also played them "straight up" for 3 quarters, arguably longer. It was only about a 10-minute sequence (end of 1st, beginning of 2nd) that MSU pushed us around and we made some mistakes.

Conversely, you could make the argument that MSU finally stopped toying around with CMU and put their foot on the gas in the 4th quarter, "when it mattered."

Brian you know the difference in playing with a big lead vs. not. It's human nature to let up.

Frankly, I doubt a power P5 has ever gone into a game with a mid major with the same intensity they approach a tough conference opponent . Conversely, the non P5 enters those games with something to prove and a high level of intensity.

I suspect part of our problem with GAS is they didn't approach it with the same intensity as they did MSU.

I don't take much away from our performance or Centrals performance vs. MSU.

Right now I see two teams that can throw it and one who can run it. If that doesn't change I suspect our status in MAC play will go as predicted. Right now Bg and Ohio concern me more than CMU as they can hurt you on the ground and through the air.

With a lead MSU is content to play bend D, because it uses clock. They don't really need points, they can get points whenever if needed. They are content to just let the game get over. Ohio State tame ting.

Yes, we were so solid we beat a 31 pt spread. Another proud moment as a Bronco.

Nothing like those SOFT Cubit wins over Iowa, Virginia, or Illinois.

Ability to run the ball - Toledo, NIU have always had it. That is what has impressed me the most about those teams over the years.

We just went down to OSU and put up some very long drives, 170 yards of rushing, controlled the clock at times. Our backs punished the lbs and safeties at times. we looked physical.

We didn't play "keep away" / pole cat / pu$$y ball that Cubit loves. just saying we didn't look soft and for once our O line wasn't man handled by a TOP (read - not Iowa, Illinois) P5 team.

PJ has much to prove and may not work out - but I like the direction of the O line and running game.

PS - Dippy: In case I wasn't clear - Cubits teams are SOFT. Glad Dunn pulled the trigger, as I wrote him often pleading with him to do so....

Just watched the 1st quarter again (so much more enjoyable than the nervousness of watching it the 1st time.)

We were RUNNING IT DOWN THEIR THROATS!!!!!

Rough and tumble boat rower failed to even test a P5 team. Even lost to Purdue.

Cubit wins over Iowa, Virginia, U Conn and Illinois.

Why do you Fleckies ignore history and talk about the future as if it has already happened
