Nicholls St. was one BIG STEP backwards. Didn't stop us from still pulling in a couple top recruiting classes, and going 8-4 the following season.

Not worried. It's one game.

Don't see us beating BGSU, NIU, Toledo, or CMU/EMU at this point. A loss wouldn't have been a big deal but it was the way WMU lost. Completely unprepared, tired, and uninspired. Time to start packing up all the "Row The Boat" crap, scrap the program, and start over.

That whole 2013 was a big step backwards. Last year, we did what we should do, beat bad teams.

Not one winning team, just bad teams. We're 1-4 in our last five games. NOT OK.

Why spend the money to fly to Georgia if we're not going to prepare for the game? Are we really that bought into the mindset that this game was a meaningless one?

I still think that we really exhausted ourselves physically and mentally against that MSU team... I mean... the two weeks leading up to that game were the most hyped of ANY game in WMU history at home... They left it all out there that Friday... and I think it may have been quite a few days before they could even plug into and digest preparation for GSU... Not making excuses... but to a player, I think they really wanted that MSU win... and went further than they thought they could physically and mentally and had no idea how to recover in time for the next week...

Just looked like it on the field... No interest, dogging it all over the field, lack of discipline, lack of fundamentals, lack of speed...

^ That is true but, in my opinion, a well coached team would have been able to get over that hump and come out ready to play the next game.

Elite teams do that all the time.

Yeah man, you see how they left it out there. Bet the spread against them, they're toast.

I think this is the message from Fleck to his team... you sometimes have to go through it, before you understand how to handle it. I think the kids needed to really learn to understand how that much emotional output takes its toll... I think Fleck even spoke about that weeks before the game... that controlling the emotional toll of the game itself is one of those things you have to learn to handle...

We apparently didn't handle it well... so I hope we learned from it...

Jacksonville State is no pushover in their division... they are used to the emotional toll... They play these big teams just like everyone else... but that game was not at Jacksonville State, and promoted by the entire community, and made into a circus as the BIGGEST thing to happen to kalamazoo in the history of kalamazoo... That's quite a bit to put on the shoulders of a team of college kids... who haven't done much of anything yet in a WMU uniform...

You call them excuses... I call them observations...

Just trying to make sense of what happened... we got our a$$es kicked... period. Not in the mood to throw the season away...

Nobody is throwing the season away, just having a conversation about how bad things were yesterday, and all of a sudden, value judgements, emotional counter arguements and full on attacks ensue.

Maybe your Saint isn't the great savior that you all annointed him? Remember, if he asks you to come over and have a drink, answer, "I'm good". Jim Jones was everything to those guys.

Wonder if Elvira is re-evaluating?

Coaches (like jockeys) need to learn it is a long race. A poker player does not sit down at the table and bet his whole wad on the first hand. I think that is basically bet the house on the first game. Admittedly beating MSU would be a career changer, but smart people go with percentages. Looking at the OOC schedule, the key game was GS, not MSU. Beat Geogia Southern and you go 2-2, not 1-3.

A better approach play hard versus MSU, play to win, but conserve your assets for the long haul. Remember, you need your horses still able to perform for Toledo and NIU at the tail end of the season. Sure, the saying is one game at a time, but somebody (the Head Coach) has to have a long term strategic plan that takes into account the entire season.

Step one, prep hard to bet Murray. Must win deal. Forget Ohio State. That game is over in the first 5 minutes. Just run your stuff and call it good. Then crucial to heal up and get ready for CMU. Another must win.

Beat CMU and the season is salvaged and you are back to square one. Take a deep breathe and work a plan for the rest of the MAC.
