I say good. I love college football and don't follow NFL. If college continues to have "NFL creep", I may actually for the very first time not follow the sport like I have my entire life. One man's opinion. Cheers!

Dammit! Does this mean I have to respect Notre Dame?
Would not have expected this, but good for them (him).
BillyBobby777, I agree with you. Last year was the first time in my life I paid more attention to the NFL than college football. I really just don't find it that enjoyable anymore outside of following ECU and the AAC. And I still keep up with C-USA some.

I would hope that ECU would join them.

Didn't Delaney say something similar a few years ago? Something about the Big Ten would go down to Division 3 if they started paying players?

Ha... yea right. The amount of money that would ultimately cost ND. This is such a BS statement.

Okay. Good. Maybe then they'll quit strong-arming conferences into telling them how things are gonna be when they're involved. But I doubt they'll stop that. That said, I do agree with what he said about college athletics being (or supposed to be) amateur in nature and at least in spirit. You are there to get an education and represent the school.

"You are there to get an education and represent the school" well said. That is truly what its supposed to be about despite the NFL creep. Cheers!

No one knows, because they're a private school, but everyone guesses that they're far and away the most profitable college football program. How would they make up for that lost income? Donations? That might work for a couple seasons, as alumni stand behind their university, but long term this would hurt a lot.

I'll give Fr. Jenkins statement more respect when Notre Dame quits reaping billions of dollars from their TV contracts and merchandising. But the reality is that they...like a lot of schools...get RICH off the product of their "student-athletes" and then posture all sorts of sentimental tripe about the "purity" of academics and "amateur" athletics.
I'm a Pastor and we have a saying: "Part-time ministry is only "part-time" in regards to pay." People still expect "part-time" clergy to be on-call for their immediate emergencies, but often don't want to pay them for that privilege. In the same way "amateur athletics" only applies to the kids doing the work...it doesn't apply to the University doing the marketing and merchandising.
(And no, I'm not being "anti-Catholic" here. If USC's President had said this, I'd be saying EXACTLY the same thing.)

I don't necessarily believe it would. Sure it could, if Notre Dame was the only "big" program making this stand, but they wouldn't be. If Notre Dame tows that line, you can bet a good amount of others will too. Whether or not they're genuine or sanctimonious. First in line behind them will be the private and academically affluent. Duke, Stanford, NW, BC, etc. The competitively middling programs in the "power" conferences would jump on board too and puff out their academic chest UNC, NCSU, UVA, GT. The SEC schools would be inclined to pay players excluding possibly Mizzou and Vandy. UT and OU are in. The Big10 could stand together but OSU, Michigan, Neb, Wis, would all likely hesitate watching the SEC. USC, UCLA would hesitate too. It could fracture the current landscape quite a bit.
I think it would be great if the top 30ish programs would leave and create a semi-pro division and the rest of us can carry on.
