Meijers just doesn't get it
Walked into a Kalamazoo 03-puke Meijers store this am and smack in front of me is MSU and UM shirt sale. 03-banghead

Guess they have not figured out WMU students are moving back to town and this is KALAMAZOO.
I believe there is some sort of WMU home football game Friday also.

It's pretty much the same at all the big box stores. Target, Walmart, Costco...filled with UM/MSU stuff. You know why? Because that's what people will buy. It's just a numbers game for them...

RE: Meijers just doesn't get it
I saw a rack FULL of cMU shirts at one of the new Meijer stores in Detroit... no Eastern, no Oakland, just Mich, Sparty and (inexplicably) cMU t-shirts galore.... very odd... it's hit or miss at the big boxers.

But a win over Sparty will change that OVERNIGHT!

ONWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Meijers just doesn't get it
Maybe Meijer sold out out of all the WMU gear already.

The real side of it is that you need to look at sales. MSU/UM have much more sales potential, plus MSU is coming to town which means the local Kalamazoo residents need to stock up on their MSU stuff. And lastly, you shouldn't care that WMU stuff isn't put out there. Usually the crap they sell is super ugly no matter what school it is. They all look like off brand crap.

That's a good point... while cMU swag is ugly in general -- the stuff they had at Meijer wasn't exactly flying off the racks...

There's a variety of hats and maybe 1 or 2 different shirts. For UM and MSU, there's hats, shirts, jackets, coolers, tents, chairs, and more.

This is at the Kzoo Costco.

West Main WalMart has it all.

Sometimes you see players over there even.

They have two color versions similar to the half zip pull over that #brocoach wears during games

Oh, I didn't see those. That's pretty cool then. Might have to pick one up...

Brown socks count?

Only if you have them tucked into your pants so they can be easily seen.

I know that Kimbo is always wearing flip-flops. Hopefully, he'll have his toenails painted with that WMU brown and gold polish. Hee.

I can attest to that. They usually have some WMU stuff year round to a varying degree. I have also seen WMU stuff at the Kalamazoo location too.

RE: Meijers just doesn't get it
FYI guys, I think some of it has to do that all Meijers are owned and run by Meijer so you'd expect the same items in Kalamazoo to match the ones in Flint, for example. The meat of the stores are all the same. Here in Grand Rapids, the Allendale Meijer isn't bursting with GVSU things. Granted, they're DII but still. Second point, in regards to selection, there's just a bigger variety of UofM/MSU things produced.

It's the same thing with the newspaper. Mlive owns and operates the Kalamazoo Gazette, as well as, say the Grand Rapids Press. The meat of the articles stay the same, hence the bulk of the college stuff being MSU/UofM. They dominate popularity. The 'leftovers' are passed on to the more local schools. Here in GR, it's a combo of GVSU/FSU/Hope/etc with the MAC roundup and the every-so-often WMU/CMU article. In Kalamazoo, the meat MSU/UofM stays the same, but the 'leftovers' are WMU/K/CMU with the every so often GVSU for example.

RE: Meijers just doesn't get it
Mlive is a tight wad group of failing papers trying to figure out how to make money in the transition from paper to ePaper. The Gazette would have been smart to go it alone. As with any merger one of group gets control. GR is running the show. They have no clue about anything outside of their bush league Hope, Calvin, GVSU market. Hence they lump WMU in with their small college mindset.

I get giving scUM and MSU top billing in a town dominated by DIi Diii and NAIA schools. That formula doesn't apply here. The Gazettes circulation goes south of Three Rivers. ND has a bigger impact on some of those area than UM or MSU.

Former editor Graham Couch and WWMT fully understood that WMU was the biggest sports draw in SW MI and treated it as such. The GR fools running MLIVE have no clue. Hence we get mega doses of Pig Ten and a smattering of MAC lumped right in with wall to wall coverage the "Wooden Shoe" battles between the Dutch equivalent of K College.!It will get worse before it gets better.

Your comment on Meijers is totally wrong. Store directors have autonomy over regional branding. The products are available to them it's up to the individual store directors and the department heads as to what they do with it. Meijer even does a significant amount of high school brandin in individual stores. But again, it's the stores choice as to what they do with it.

I can't believe you WANT to buy spirit gear from Meijer, or any chain. Much better gear at local stores, like the bookstore or Campus Den. It isn't like you will find any R.T.B stuff at Meijer, Target or a bulk sales organization.
