True, you don't have to, but you could/will end up with multiple teams with the same record to decide who will be the CC.
You could end up with 4 8-0 teams who haven't play each other. Gets really messy.
So if CCU is added either the CCG is added or Idaho and NMSU will be let go at the end of their contracts. Which is why if the decision to only have 10 football teams, why NMSU wouldn't be added because splitting into divisions for basketball and other sports only takes the eastern teams to NMSU every other year.
Guess what the first decision to be made is should the Sunbelt go to 12 and have a CCG? If yes, add CCU or EKU.
If no, then the decision should be to add NMSU as a full member, split into divisions for all other sports (like before when Denver was in the Sunbelt). With divisions you don't need to worry about 'travel partners'. If NMSU wasn't going to be a serious addition, then why pay a visit to them?

FYI, in response to me on twitter he said his source was from Minnesota and outside of the conference.
From a source VERY close to the process Coastal was voted in yesterday. They will begin competition in 16-17. I'd assume that means football will be a full member in 2018.
RE: Sun Belt Expansion Has Votes--Decision To Be Made Sunday
If we are at 12 in football we will have a title game. Skipping only one or two, the odds are huge that you get a rematch and no obvious "Well you won your division" in picking the two teams.
Big XII commissioner has said their members are opposed to title game right now, part of that is because it is a guaranteed rematch.

Here should be the timeline:
2015-- Coastal still FCS in Big South eligible for FCS playoffs
2016-- 1st year of transition. coastal still in Big South in football but not eligible for FCS playoffs. All other sports in Sun Belt and eligible for Belt championships and NCAA tourney
2017-- All Coastal sports in Belt/ Belt championship game likely. Only restriction on Coastal is no bowl game
2018-- Coastal fully bowl eligible and fully transitioned
Seems right. And keep an eye on Missouri St., so when they're ready we add NMSU Olympics and drop Idaho. (Sorry, Idaho fans, it's just such a logical endpoint to so many scenarios...)

For whatever reason I have some gut instinct that we are going to end up in the MAC for some reason. I have no clue why I feel that way - I would prefer the Sun Belt because I think we fit culturally, geographically and athletically better there.
RE: Sun Belt Expansion Has Votes--Decision To Be Made Sunday
I just sorry that Missouri State is not a part of this discussion..
I would prefer them than any of the others...
Looks like you guys dropped the ball...

You guys?
TIL Sun Belt membership is determined by polls on the CSNBBS board.

I think they may have to put together an independent schedule for 2016 like ODU did. I doubt the Big South would want them included after all other sports have left.

Why couldn't they just move to the Sun Belt immediately like Georgia Southern and App did?

From a business stand point, yes. I would say Idaho has a 8% chance of having their contract extended. NMSU has in the 50/50-40/60 range.
In order to have that championship game, the conference is going to have to extend both. Assuming that CCU enters the Sun Belt for the 2017 and that deregulation doesn't occur, we're going to need 12 teams. I think both get extended or Idaho is replaced with UMass. It buys EKU and/or Mo State time to get ready.

GaSo and App played one year in the SoCon, but ineligible for either the conference title and FCS playoffs, but played a SoCon schedule.

Right, but wouldn't this year be Coastal's one year in the Big South?
I still don't see anything that would necessarily prevent them from moving in next year other than the conference or the school not wanting to.

They had to accept an invite before July. They are more like ODU than GS and App as far as timelines go.

July 1 was the deadline to compete in the SBC for 2015-2016.
They can be in the sbc, but not bowl eligible for 2016-2017 if the school and conference agree to that timeline.

No. It is a 2 year transition. Year 1 (presumably 2016-17) the team would be FCS transitional but post-season ineligible. Year 2 (presumably 2017-18) the team is FBS transitional but post-season ineligible. 2018-19 would be the first year with post-season eligibility.
RE: Sun Belt Expansion Has Votes--Decision To Be Made Sunday
I would think attempting to enter the Sunbelt in 2017 (football) for CCU would put them at a significant disadvantage. The idea behind the transition year is that you are permitted to exceed the FCS standard of 63 scholarships (therefore ineligible for post season). If CCU accepted today, they would still be playing with a standard FCS roster. and they would enter FBS with only ONE "FBS" recruiting class.
