Outline of Pastner's press conference (John Martin)
HERE >>>
http://www.espn929.com/pages/21904900.php?
Most important IMO >>>
... Austin Nichols’ departure cratered the Tigers’ front-court depth, and it’s because of that reality that Pastner said he’ll adjust to a 4-around-1 offense next season (aka, four-guard lineups). I realize that phrase may cause nightmares, considering the unsuccessful four-guard lineup in 2013. But, this time, Pastner doesn’t really have a choice.... “We’re now moving more to a 4-around-1 or size down or try to create match-up problems at the four-spot, have better floor spacing. We will have to play faster and do some different things....

The head scratcher:
"He has three big men: Shaq Goodwin and two freshmen in Dedric Lawson."

RE: Outline of Pastner's press conference (John Martin)
I'm not against going small actually. The Warriors did it in the NBA and Nova did it in college.
But you have to play to your strengths and actually use the speed and shooting advantages that a 4 out lineup gives you. Plus one of the guards needs to be tough enough to cover 4's for stretches, I'd guess that task would fall to Markel to play the Geron Johnson 'wing as a 4' role.
Pastner seems to want cerebral, skilled, players at the expense of brawn and force. I am not opposed to that and it would dove tall with his hoops education (Lute Olsen's 1-4 often had a smallish '4' man at the high post) and his recruiting strategy.
I think you can win this way, but you really have to emphasize gang rebounding and create turnovers.
I actually like small personally, but this team seems to lack outside shooting for the spacing. The three guards I would assume would get the most time (Kedren, Tarrant, Markel) are skilled players who can play at an elite level, but none are deadeye marksmen,. Last time we went small all 4 could stroke it to some degree.
If you take something like this:
PG: Kedren / Broddie?
SG: Tarrant / Avery
3G/SF: Markel / Burrell / KJ
PF: Dedric /
C: Shaq / Marshall
And make it small:
PG: Kedren
SG: Tarrant
SF: Markel
PF: Burrell / KJ
C: Shaq / Dedric
That 7-9 man rotation (spot minutes Avery and Broddie) might do some work.
Honestly, might not even be that small (the 4's in the small are both 6'7", even if both are thin)
I've heard worse ideas...

He might start. Who can really tell. But a skinny center who should legitimately still be playing for his high school team ain't going to be our savior IMO. So 'start' or 'off the bench' - no real matter IMO.

I understand and read you, but there is a strength to cutting against the grain and making matchup issues.
If we had Nichols still, we'd probably go a traditional lineup, but going small with our roster would work at times.
Play the hand you're dealt. Still want to have a good season, if this is how we roll, I can live with it.
Just win baby.

Gotta have great shooters and PG ala Thompson and Curry with the Warriors
Gotta have NBA level guards like Nova did if we wanna pull off this feat last done by a college team and actually had a good run in the tourney.

To pull it off takes an innovative coaching style and game planning.
To this point, pastner has not been very innovative.
But this *could* be the breakout. The athletes are there.
Gotta say it: "gotta make shots"

I don't think Broddie will play this year. It's too deep at the guard spot not necessarily great players but there some quality players in the group. KJ, Randall and a few others will get the mins to spell Tarrant, Markel and Kedren. I think Avery will play some because he is a senior but he prob shouldn't cause he is not very good honestly. The only player out of the jucos who can play is Burrell. Your best lineup will be Tarrant, Markel, Shaq, Dedric and KJ. I dunno if they will play together much but that would be my five with Burrell the sixth man and Kedren backup pg. Then it's a toss up who wil be in the rotation.

The season doesn't start for another 10 weeks. Plenty of time for me to try and work up some minimal level of interest in this upcoming season.

Logically, apathy should drive you and your ilk to cease posting on Tiger basketball. Indeed, I hardily endorse and hope for it.

You each make good points, IMO. It is the quality of players that counts more than size. Let's hope our quality suffices to win many games.
I think we should remember that playing small all the time is not the only option. We could start Dedric and Shaq and sub small.

RE: Outline of Pastner's press conference (John Martin)
AN leaving is the perfect scapegoat situation. Team struggles again, "... how can you expect them to succeed when they lost their #1 scorer/rebounder so close to the beginning of the season". Team does better than expected, "... Pastner has done an amazing job with this group considering the huge surprise departure of AN so late in the year".

If Kedren and Burrell do not start (which I doubt will be the case) Memphis will be a really , really good team.
