RE: Temple signs stadium extension for 2 years ...
Generally in home & home agreements, the home team keeps 100% of the gate. In 2 for 1s, 3 for 1s or buy games, the home team that gets the more home games virtually always pays a fee that varies greatly to the visiting team. Several years ago, Southern Miss had a home & home contract with Nebraska where USM would get to keep the home gate. But due to USM financials at the time, USM renegotiated a fee to move their contractual game to Nebraska and received a healthy fee instead that was thought to be a higher amount than they would make by having the game in Hattiesburg - and they got another home game with Nebraska scheduled at a later date. This just to point out there is no std practice, it's between the schools involved to negotiate. Another example I'm familiar with is the Georgia practice of paying $800K - $1M to opponents for buy games where UGA has no return obligation.

Yes, that makes more sense to me. Keeping the entire gate would make it difficult for Temple to budget in the two years that they would travel to Penn State.
So maybe Penn State generates $14 mil per game times 2 for a whopping $28 mil in the two home games. Maybe they payout to Temple $2 mil of that $28 mil. PSU still has $26 mil to work with.

Temple at home let's say they generate $7 mil. Pay Penn State $1 mil.

All said in done in the three games series Temple would get $8 mil of the pie. Well, that is before breaking off the Eagles and the city. I can see Temple only having $5 mil to contribute to their coffers from this series after all is said and one.
Compared to perhaps a whopping $25 mil that Penn State would have.

I could run these numbers many different ways but in the end a PSU or ND will get something like 5 times more revenue from these 2 for 1 series.

Fans up at Happy Valley get pissed when they see Army, Kent State and Akron on the PSU home schedule. But it's a big payday for the school when they play these lower rung teams ... Yes, that includes Temple!

On another note... It's going to see how the Temple pres with his background in university finances turns Temple football into a money maker. I say this because the previous president once emailed me when I got on him about his lack of support for football.
Essentially he stated that he would be more behind the program if it were financially viable. I hated to hear what he was saying but he had a point. Many football schools are able to generate tremendous revenue from their football programs. Temple back then as they are now breakeven at best when it comes to football.
We all know that attendance is headed down next year without PSU and ND on the schedule. We may only average 20k fans. If we do well as many people expect and the attendance trends upwards to 30k, can we do well with that size crowd.
20k avg in an NFL stadium is absolutely a money loss. 30k-35k might bring us to breakeven. Still the Eagles would like to see us lock into a 30 year, $3 mil per year lease.
The Temple Trustees will have to decide whether it's better to rent or own. I think that 90% of homeowners do better owning. For football programs it's probably 100% do better owning! Seems like a no-brainer to me.
Seems like a sure shot way to increase revenue coming in for the football program. Heck, Temple could rent the stadium out on non-football days and be just like the Eagles ...

Brian, they're not giving up gate for home games. Stop saying it.

If Temple builds an OCS where is everyone going to park. Where will people tailgate. There will be no beer sales in the stadium. The LINC is a ten minute train ride from campus, provides ample parking, and a great game day tailgate atmosphere. Quite frankly I enjoy the LINC when I go to Temple FB games. Still say that Temple should have winged a deal for the old Vet for their permanent home and refurbished it to suit their own needs with Turf for all sports. Building parking garages at the complex to make up for the lost parking spaces would have been a lot cheaper than building a new stadium. State and city funds (bonds / loans) could be used for the project as well as some Temple money and money from the Eagles, Phillies, 76er's, and the Flyers, as well as the Verizon Restaurant / Bar Center.

Good luck on the new OCS if it becomes reality though. I'll be there when you play Rutgers or when I go to the Temple games with family Temple alumni a couple of times a year when Rutgers is to far out of town to travel to the game.

We sell beer at the Liacouras Center, so I imagine the football stadium will too. I'm not sure why you would discourage building an OCS. As a Rutgers fan, I'm sure you notice the difference over the last few years.

I don't buy that idea carolinaknights... If Temple had refurbished the VET as a home, and the complex had both the Vet, Linc, the ballpark, the arena, and the experience... with parking garages instead of the lots - my guess is the tailgating wouldn't be how it is and thus resemble what tailgating would be on campus LIMITED!

Rutgers is closer to Temple than Penn State. I think that it would be great if we could have PSU size crowds for the RU vs Temple game. But I believe the last time we played we got about 32k so I suppose that is the number unless both TU and RU are ranked.

Temple did a study back in 2000 when looking at a campus stadium. The study stated that on Saturdays, the large staff of several thousand employees won't be on campus which would free up parking. The garage to the basketball arena as well as other garages and lots could be used.

Public transportation including buses, subways and trains could also be used.
Special shuttle buses would be another option.

30k would mean a very crowded campus and stadium. But to me it would be a good thing to use the term crowded and Temple football in the same sentence.

Someone already pointed out that beer will be sold at the stadium as it is at the basketball arena. There is something like 7 pubs already on campus.

Tailgaters always seem to do what they do. How about temp parking in Fairmont Park which is a mile away. The park would allow for tremendous tailgates. Shuttle buses for say $2 could then take people to and from the game.
