I feel the opposite. It's always just felt like a forced rivalry to me. The AD keeps pushing it, but when I was on campus, the vibe was always more intense for Sam Houston and Nicholls St.

Maybe it was cause we didn't play utsa in football until that last year, idk. Heck, I had never even heard of utsa until sophomore or junior year at State, despite going to high school in Austin.

By the way, if you can't tell, I hate the new 8 year deal with them.. Why you would want to tie us at the hip with a school that has a glass ceiling, for the next 10 years while we are trying to grow bigger and better is beyond me.

I'm with you I felt like the rivalry was forced too. It just popped out of nowhere. Back in the early 2000's I honestly didn't experience anything of that nature during my years at SWT/TXST as student. I however like the deal. It gives us time to build our program and really lay the groundwork for potential OOC wins with good attendance and money in our pockets.

But rivalry, I still do not see it because I can't relate to it. The only true rival we've ever had was SHSU. Houston could be a rival but I don't think it is either. Only time will tell. Just rather beat the pants off everyone in Texas for the next 4-5 decades in Football.

RE: Sun Belt OOC Rivalry Games
I'm just not getting the talk about a "forced" rivalry between Texas State and UTSA. I totally understand how SHSU would've been a stronger rivalry since UTSA only recently added football, but when you're in the same conference together for 21 years and your campuses are only separated by about a half-hour drive, how is anything forced? The rivalry developed naturally and grew, and will be resurrected with our upcoming series of games in football, which I think will be great for both schools.

And btw, for it to be a true rivalry, it has to go both ways. Believe me when I say that UTSA and Texas State both are just an afterthought for UH. As a member of the former SWC, they're still sore about being left out of the P5 expansion and really don't want anything to do with G5 Texas schools to begin with. I think some of you are trying to produce a rivalry with Houston where there really is none from their perspective.

All I meant by saying it has always felt forced, is that the athletic department keeps pushing for it in advertisements and marketing and naming it, but I never felt like games against UTSA had the intensity on campus that we have for other schools that we do consider rivals.

I mean, sure it's more intense on campus than say when we play ULM, but that's only because it's another Texas school.

It's funny how some complain about the AD "forcing a rivalry" but then whine about the lack of marketing. Besides Sam Houston I couldn't even identify the logos of the other southland schools my freshman year. I liked playing sam but mostly because I had a bunch of high school friends that went there. I guess I could see how some would see utsa as not as big of a rival since they didn't have football but I never really followed FCS football anyways so that really didn't matter to me

Houston is knocking on the door of a Top 25 recruiting class (29th currently) with a five star (99) DT and a four star DT (95), as well as nine or ten (80+) three star recruits. I don't follow them much, or know who their coach is, but he must be the bees knees.

Might not be a great time to play them. I'm not knocking Texas State, its not a good time for anyone in the SBC to play Houston, really.

Their new coach is Tom Herman a young (40) and (unfortunately for us) up and comer. He was the OC at TXST during that 2005 run. Went to Rice with Bailiff then Iowa State and off to Ohio State in 2011. So, yeah, he was their OC for that NC last year.

From Wiki:
Ohio State

On December 9, 2011, Urban Meyer selected Herman as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Buckeyes.[6] On December 9, 2014, after leading Ohio State's fourth ranked offense while playing two backup quarterbacks, Herman was awarded the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach.[7]

RE: Sun Belt OOC Rivalry Games
As sweet as a win over UGA would be for GS, I don't think that the two will be rivals for a long time.

UGA is content in thinking of itself as the be-all, end-all of everything in the state, regardless of what the actual results might say. UGA will schedule GS in football until they get a close call or until GS jumps up and gets them. After that, there will be a few months of teams giving UGA grief, but they'll shake it off and promptly never schedule GS again.

It's already evident in how they currently schedule games with GS. They're game to play our women's hoops team or volleyball team anytime (and even come to Statesboro once in a while) since they've always had a huge edge in those sports. Men's basketball has been up and down for both teams for decades, so no way UGA takes the chance of possibly losing a game there.

Two years ago (spring '14), UGA finally put GS back on the baseball schedule after nearly a decade of ducking us after going 1-5 against the Eagles in the early 2000s. We've handed them their asses two years in a row on the diamond and I'm sure that they'll disappear for another decade as soon as whatever contract was agreed upon expires.

As far as the football field is concerned, I understand the excitement about hooking up with Marshall, but I wasn't around GS back then. Personally, I'd like to see us play ODU every once in a while. We had two epic playoff games and are now trying to make noise in FBS. I'd welcome the Monarchs back to Statesboro, so long as all parties can agree on the fact that their coach is the epitome of 'douchebag'.

I'm not being a smart ass but why do you consider Wilder the epitome of douchebag? Just wandering what other fans think of our coach?

I'm not being a smart ass but why do you consider Wilder the epitome of douchebag? Just wandering what other fans think of our coach?

It may have just been the circumstances of losing two close games, but a lot of our fans remember his words and actions. The guy was pretty dismissive of GS leading up to the first game. When we had them beat, but ODU recovered an onside kick by clearly touching it after only about 8 yards, Wilder held up the game for five minutes arguing and refused to leave the field.

The next year, I think he was smart enough to know that he didn't have a run defense that could stop GS. Of course, he did have a great offense. But even that bit him in the hind quarters as the guy let his offense go for it on 4th and 6 from their own 35(ish) in a tie game with four minutes to play.

So many things about what he said and did gave off an air of being unbeatable when there was no real reason to think that was true.

Like I said before, those games with ODU were awesome and I wouldn't mind seeing more of them. I would just add as a caveat that one of the reasons I'd want to play them is to embarrass Wilder again.

La Tech and Houston seem to be the only other blood feuds going, though I'm sure GaSo would relish a victory over UGA.

They're probably not rivals but Mizzou will be a big game and MSU has gotten play here.

If you think I've scrapped a legit rival, add 'em back in.

What? Men's basketball is 5-5 in the last 15 years and the Lady Techsters have a 39-1 record vs ULL.

Give us a ring when you field a baseball team. Oh wait, that's the UNTs, right? No, actually applies to you guys as well.

So you win a baseball game a decide to bring a thread back from the dead as if actually accomplish something? Newsflash, Fanatico doesn't even post on this board anymore. Let's not forget you had to overextend your ace (who BTW is now hurt) in order to get the win earlier this year. I'll be impressed if your team actually makes the postseason. Until then, you and all you Tech fags can all go **** yourselves.

Well, I was looking for the thread from last year where the Cajuns were saying they had the 2nd best athletic program in the state, but this one came up and I saw that Fanatico asked for a call. So I called him. Didn't know he wasn't here anymore. Carry on.

Per the UL media guide and this year's results, UL holds the all time record for baseball 78-64. Tony Robichaux basically owns LaTech baseball with an all time record of 27-10. Probably part of the reason you guys didn't wanna play us for a extended period from 2008 until present. I'm very curious where you got the 6-4 baseball record in favor of Tech, because that number does not match with any year by year results that I can find.

I think Texas St and North Texas should start playing yearly because that would develop into a nice rivalry. Thoughts Texas St fans?

Ring, ring. Tech calling ULL. We own you in everything. 04-cheers

Football: 9-0
Men's Basketball: 6-5
Women's Basketball: 40-1
Baseball: 6-4

I think y'all cut us off from basketball and baseball when we wouldn't play you in football (WAC days). We agreed to play you in football and y'all agreed to add baseball and basketball back. I could be wrong though.

I think I got that we were 4-4 in the past 15 years from our media guide. Then the sweep this year put us at 6-4 for the past 15 years.

I'd like to play them, or any in-state team. I'm sure we'd embrace them as rivals but them, they think they're UT or something...
