A YouTube video of Notre Dame-Green Pond shortstop Eric Santiago snagged the attention of the University of Cincinnati.

Watching him play in person convinced the Bearcats to offer him a baseball scholarship.

Cincinnati's early interest in Santiago paid off last month. The rising senior gave a verbal commitment to the Bearcats, allowing him to put his college recruitment to rest.

Santiago said Maryland, Lehigh, Saint Joseph's, Penn State, Lafayette and UNC-Asheville were among the other schools looking at him. Cincinnati's offer made his decision easy.

Santiago took a Dec. 20 visit to the Bearcats' campus to work out for the coaching staff. Cincinnati also sent a couple of coaches to watch him play this summer at a Perfect Game tournament in Georgia, leading to his scholarship offer.

Santiago said he planned to study criminal justice at Cincinnati.

"When I went to visit, I was really impressed with the field, the school, the academic part and everything about it," he said. "I fell in love with the school."

Notre Dame-Green Pond coach Mike Bedics wasn't surprised to see his shortstop commit to a Division I program. Bedics coached Eric's two older brothers, Mike and Dan. Bedics remembers Mike telling him several years ago that Eric would be the best of the Santiago brothers.

Bedics wasn't sure how long it would take Eric Santiago to contribute for the Crusaders. He found out when Santiago played fall ball with Notre Dame ahead of his freshman season.

"Him showing what he could do as a freshman in the fall season, he earned the respect of the older kids," Bedics said. "They knew he was a good ballplayer."

Santiago earned a spot on The Morning Call's all-area first team this spring. He hit .470 with five doubles, 20 runs, 16 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. He also had a .532 on-base percentage and a .962 fielding percentage, and was picked for the Colonial League's first team.

Santiago, who has started at shortstop since his first game at Notre Dame, will start his senior season with 103 career hits.
